The world’s most recognizable soccer player, Lionel Messi, lent his star power to prediction market operator Kalshi through a sponsored Instagram advertisement, delivering the company significant exposure during the 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament.
Published on Sunday, the promotional content showcased Messi appearing with fellow Argentina national team members Nicolas Otamendi and Rodrigo De Paul. The advertisement centered on a Kalshi-sponsored promotional contest while featuring a prediction market focused on Argentina’s chances of capturing another World Cup championship. The displayed probability stood at 8.9%.
This marketing initiative stems from Kalshi’s June 10 partnership announcement establishing the company as an official sponsor of the Argentina Football Association throughout the 2026 World Cup competition.
With more than 500 million followers on Instagram, Messi’s promotional post generated over 1.4 million likes in just a few days.
Details of the Argentina Football Association Partnership
The sponsorship arrangement provides Kalshi with co-branded promotional opportunities, collaborative social media initiatives, and authorization to incorporate the AFA’s official emblem and branding materials across its marketing efforts.
The agreement extends beyond marketing to include a data-sharing element. Genius Sports, serving as the AFA’s designated data and streaming provider, will furnish official game statistics to Kalshi for developing and resolving sports-related prediction contracts.
Kalshi will participate in Genius Sports’ integrity monitoring system as well. This framework provides sports organizations with enhanced oversight of associated market movements.
Argentina launches its World Cup championship defense on Tuesday, facing Algeria in Kansas City as part of Group J competition.
Expanding Sports Partnership Strategy
The Messi endorsement represents one element of Kalshi’s comprehensive strategy to secure partnerships with prominent athletes and sports figures.
The platform previously brought aboard two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Giannis Antetokounmpo in February and professional golfer Bryson DeChambeau in January.
Renowned football manager José Mourinho also featured in a Kalshi Instagram promotional campaign earlier this month. That particular post accumulated more than 137,000 likes.
Kalshi documented record-breaking $5.1 billion in notional trading volume throughout the World Cup’s opening week. This figure represents the highest single-week performance in the company’s operational history.
Macquarie analysts have forecasted the 2026 World Cup could establish itself as the most substantial betting event ever recorded, with projections exceeding $50 billion in total wagers across all platforms globally.
Ongoing Legal Challenges Mount
Despite impressive growth metrics, prediction market platforms are encountering significant resistance from multiple state governments.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz enacted the nation’s first comprehensive prediction market prohibition in May. Additional states such as Arizona, New York, Illinois, and Connecticut have similarly contested Kalshi’s operational legitimacy.
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission has intervened to prevent state-level enforcement efforts in these territories, and legal analysts anticipate the controversy may ultimately require Supreme Court intervention.
Regulatory challenges extend internationally as well. In March, a Buenos Aires judicial authority mandated the restriction of competing platform Polymarket in Argentina, notwithstanding Kalshi’s recently established partnership with the AFA.
