Shares of Microsoft (MSFT) dropped 2.73% on Wednesday following the revelation of an expanded strategic alliance with Databricks, securing their collaborative efforts well into the 2030s.
The agreement stipulates that Databricks will migrate its internal operations and data analytics infrastructure to the Azure Databricks platform. Additionally, the company will expand its deployment of Azure Cobalt, Microsoft’s proprietary Arm-based processor technology.
Databricks is currently utilizing Azure Cobalt 100 processors. The transition roadmap includes upgrading to Cobalt 200, which Microsoft claims delivers performance improvements of up to 50% while featuring built-in memory encryption as a standard security measure.
This hardware commitment represents a substantial vote of confidence in Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure development strategy.
The partnership expansion will bring tighter Databricks platform integration throughout Microsoft’s product portfolio. Integration points will span Microsoft 365, Teams, Copilot, Power BI, Microsoft Purview, and Microsoft Foundry.
Advanced AI Capabilities Embedding Across Microsoft Ecosystem
The agreement calls for embedding Databricks’ Genie AI solution and Unity AI Gateway directly within Microsoft customer environments. Genie enables conversational data analytics, allowing users to interact with complex datasets using natural language queries.
“With Databricks Genie and Unity AI Gateway deeply integrated across Microsoft’s products, we’re helping enterprises unify their data and ground AI in business knowledge,” said Ali Ghodsi, co-founder and CEO of Databricks.
Judson Althoff, CEO of Microsoft Commercial Business, emphasized that Databricks’ choice to operate its own infrastructure on Azure Databricks “gives customers confidence in a platform proven at enterprise scale.”
The Azure Databricks platform already serves thousands of mutual enterprise clients. High-profile organizations leveraging the solution include Banco Bradesco, Electrolux, SMBC, and Unilever.
Databricks Reaches $188 Billion Valuation Milestone
More than 20,000 organizations worldwide rely on the Databricks platform, encompassing 70% of Fortune 500 enterprises.
Just last week, Databricks finalized a substantial funding round establishing the company’s valuation at $188 billion. The transaction is anticipated to conclude later this summer.
This valuation positions the San Francisco-headquartered company among the most valuable privately-held enterprises globally.
Althoff noted that the strengthened partnership will empower customers to achieve “greater performance, efficiency, and scale for their most demanding workloads” through Azure Cobalt-powered cloud infrastructure.
MSFT shares were down 2.73% at the time of the partnership announcement.
