In contrast to most American models requiring paid subscriptions, Kimi K3 offers unrestricted access—users can download, customize, and deploy it on their own infrastructure at no cost. This accessibility immediately drew global developer interest.
The response proved overwhelming. Within just 48 hours, Moonshot had to pause accepting new users as their infrastructure buckled under the load.
Benchmark testing showed Kimi K3 achieving performance comparable to OpenAI’s GPT series and Anthropic’s Claude across multiple evaluations. In certain assessments, it actually exceeded their scores.
Research firm Counterpoint estimates the performance differential between Chinese and American AI systems has shrunk to approximately three to six months.
Washington Points Finger at Intellectual Property Violations
The release prompted immediate pushback from US officials. Michael Kratsios, a technology advisor in the White House, took to X claiming Moonshot employed distillation methods on Anthropic’s Fable to create K3, characterizing it as “large-scale, covert industrial distillation.”
Sarah Heck, who oversees policy at Anthropic, supported this position, labeling the situation “IP theft and industrial espionage” with “serious national security risks.”
Scott Bessent, serving as Treasury Secretary, indicated that sanctions and inclusion on America’s trade restriction list remain possibilities for companies engaging in intellectual property violations.
Moonshot firmly rejected these allegations. A representative from China’s Washington embassy dismissed the accusations as “entirely unfounded.”
Independent experts expressed doubt about the distillation narrative. Wei Sun from Counterpoint noted timing inconsistencies. According to Sun, Moonshot would not have had sufficient time to train K3 using Anthropic’s most recent models before the product launch.
Company History and Industry Implications
Yang Zhilin established Moonshot three years ago. The Chinese technologist, who completed his education at Carnegie Mellon University, famously declined an opportunity associated with Apple’s Tim Cook to pursue his entrepreneurial vision.
During 2023 alone, the startup secured approximately $300 million across two major financing rounds.
Kimi K3’s introduction mirrors the trajectory established by DeepSeek earlier in 2025, when that Chinese system caused industry-wide disruption. Experts observe that China’s AI advancement is growing increasingly reliable and difficult to discount.
“DeepSeek was a surprise. K3 is evidence that China’s progress is becoming more repeatable,” said Poe Zhao, founder of Hello China Tech.
The timing is notable: Kimi K3 arrived just one month following the US government’s withdrawal of Anthropic’s Fable and Mythos models due to security considerations. China’s open-source AI landscape continues accelerating.
