Key Points
- Ethena Pay introduced Earn+, a leveraged vault strategy utilizing USDe collateral and USDT borrowing at approximately 11x leverage, targeting 12% annual yields.
- The oracle feeding USDe prices to Aave tracks USDT instead, potentially failing to register independent USDe price declines.
- With 11x leverage exposure, a 2% devaluation in USDe could wipe out 22% of depositor capital before accounting for fees.
- A 1% shift in USDT borrowing rates would reduce annualized equity returns by roughly 10%.
- Users may request withdrawals at any time with a 24-hour processing target, though Ethena Pay acknowledges delays are possible.
Ethena Pay recently rolled out Earn+, a new yield-generating vault that promises annual returns as high as 12%. However, the product’s structural design introduces vulnerabilities that may remain hidden in standard performance metrics.
The platform revealed the offering on Oct. 28. The strategy deploys USDe as collateral while borrowing USDT against it, creating leverage of roughly 11 times deposited capital.
Upshift and Steakhouse operate the vault infrastructure via Aave v4 on the Avalanche network, while Ethena Pay serves as the consumer-facing interface.
Oracle Configuration Tracks Alternative Asset
Decentralized lending protocols rely on oracle price feeds to determine collateral value and debt obligations. These valuations dictate how close any position sits to liquidation thresholds.
According to an Oct. 20 technical assessment from Aave Labs, the USDe oracle deployed on Avalanche references USDT pricing data. The team explicitly acknowledged this configuration would fail to capture a USDe price decline that occurs independently of USDT movements.
The oracle implementation utilizes Chainlink’s USDT/USD feed capped at $1.04. Should USDe experience a discount while USDT maintains parity, the vault’s health metrics could appear stable even as depositors suffer material losses.
In an amended proposal dated Oct. 19, LlamaRisk suggested a 93% collateral factor for USDe positions. The specific vault address, real-time balances, and active oracle parameters remain unconfirmed through independent verification.
CryptoSlate constructed a theoretical scenario modeling 11x leverage dynamics. In this framework, $100 in depositor equity would back 1,100 USDe tokens against 1,000 USDT in outstanding debt.
Should USDe drop to $0.99, equity would decline 11%. A fall to $0.98 would trigger a 22% loss, while a move to $0.95 would eliminate 55% of capital, excluding transaction costs and management fees.
Funding Rate Sensitivity and Redemption Mechanics
With debt positions ten times the size of initial deposits, financing costs exert outsized influence on net returns. A single percentage point rise in annual USDT borrowing rates would reduce simple equity returns by approximately 10%.
Accruing interest continuously expands the debt balance, which degrades the position’s health factor over time. Aave Labs emphasized that standard USDe tokens generate no native yield, unlike the staked sUSDe variant.
Ethena Pay has eliminated its own deposit and withdrawal charges. Nevertheless, Upshift’s governing documentation permits management fees, performance-based fees, and instant withdrawal premiums. Fee schedules tailored to Earn+ have not been publicly disclosed.
Upshift’s risk framework grants a multi-signature owner wallet authority to suspend withdrawals and execute emergency exits. The redemption architecture combines a batched queue system with an instant option backed by reserve liquidity.
Ethena imposes a $4.5 million ceiling on total Earn+ deposits. Per-user limits stand at $20,000 for Standard tier accounts, $50,000 for Pro tier, and $200,000 for VIP tier participants.
Ethena Pay reports aggregate holdings exceeding $8 million in USDe across approximately 1,400 active accounts. The application currently operates in 47 jurisdictions, with availability in the United States, European Union, and United Kingdom designated as forthcoming.
Ethena Pay states that withdrawal requests face no mandatory holding period and complete processing within 24 hours. The platform’s FAQ section cautions that certain withdrawals may require extended processing windows.
