Residents of New Jersey who use Coinbase can now access staking rewards following the state’s decision to withdraw a legal challenge that had prevented the service since 2023. This development narrows the list of jurisdictions where the cryptocurrency platform continues to encounter regulatory hurdles around staking offerings.
Molly Abraham, who serves as vice president of legal at Coinbase, announced the development through her social media channels. According to Abraham, state authorities also removed a cease-and-desist directive that had previously barred the company from providing staking options to Garden State users.
Staking allows cryptocurrency holders to commit their digital assets to support blockchain network operations. Participants receive compensation in the form of cryptocurrency rewards for their contribution.
Origins of the New Jersey Dispute
The state’s Bureau of Securities initiated enforcement proceedings against Coinbase during 2023. Officials maintained that the platform’s staking services constituted an unregistered securities product.
The regulatory body contended that Coinbase was required to register its staking-as-a-service offering in accordance with New Jersey’s securities regulations. Throughout the duration of the case, qualified residents within the state were unable to enroll in the program or generate returns from their cryptocurrency positions.
Following dismissal of the lawsuit and removal of the enforcement order, Coinbase has restored staking capabilities for affected customers. The legal matter spanned approximately three years before reaching its conclusion.
Faryar Shirzad, serving as chief policy officer at Coinbase, expressed satisfaction with the resolution. He characterized it as a significant advancement for staking availability throughout the nation.
The exchange acknowledged that challenges persist. Wisconsin, Maryland, California, and Washington remain among jurisdictions where regulatory limitations or ongoing disputes require attention.
