Paolo Ardoino, chief executive of Tether, disclosed that the stablecoin issuer maintains approximately 150,000 Bitcoin in its corporate treasury. The revelation came during his keynote address at the Plan ₿ Forum held in Lugano, Switzerland.
Speaking at the conference, Ardoino characterized the holdings as “give or take 150,000 Bitcoin” without providing granular details on wallet distribution or acquisition timelines for the digital asset.
The executive also revealed that Tether’s platform reaches more than 730 million users globally. According to Ardoino, the company onboards roughly 30 million new wallets each quarter.
Bitcoin Holdings and Reserve Breakdown
Tether initiated its Bitcoin accumulation strategy in May 2023, implementing a policy to allocate a portion of quarterly profits toward cryptocurrency purchases.
The company’s third-quarter attestation pegged its Bitcoin reserves at $8.37 billion as of the September 30 reporting date. This represents a significant increase from approximately $5.8 billion recorded at the close of June.
Because reserve assets are valued at market prices on the reporting date, the dollar figure in the attestation doesn’t perfectly align with Ardoino’s Bitcoin quantity disclosure.
On October 30, Tether released its Q3 attestation, audited by BDO. The document revealed total reserve assets of $191.45 billion backing liabilities of approximately $183.50 billion.
Surplus reserves expanded to $7.95 billion, marking substantial growth from the $4.1 billion figure reported at June’s end. The quarter generated $1.5 billion in net operating profit, pushing the nine-month cumulative total to $4.5 billion.
Direct holdings of U.S. Treasury bills comprised approximately $122.84 billion. Overnight reverse repurchase agreements contributed an additional $9.52 billion, bringing combined Treasury exposure to nearly $132.4 billion.
Additional reserve components included $19.08 billion in precious metals (gold) and $14.18 billion in secured lending. USDT circulation remained stable around $184 billion throughout the initial nine months of 2026.
Independence Stack Framework Introduced
Ardoino unveiled an ambitious technological vision dubbed the Independence Stack during his presentation. This framework consolidates various tools designed to operate with minimal dependence on centralized infrastructure. The CEO drew inspiration from Isaac Asimov’s Foundation science fiction series in framing his vision.
The initiative encompasses five core pillars: energy infrastructure, Bitcoin mining operations, communications networks, self-custody wallet technology, and artificial intelligence development. Ardoino positioned these technologies as enablers of greater community autonomy.
Tether has deployed capital into solar-powered battery kiosk infrastructure across African markets. Ardoino noted that approximately 5,000 kiosks currently serve two million users while creating economic opportunities for 30,000 women in the distribution network. The company aims to scale to 100,000 kiosks within five years, potentially reaching 200 million people.
Last October, Tether’s open-source Mining Development Kit received endorsements from 15 major mining companies, equipment manufacturers and mining pools. Supporters include industry heavyweights Bitmain, Bitdeer, Canaan, MicroBT, Foundry Digital and F2Pool.
The communications pillar features Holepunch, a peer-to-peer networking system that operates without traditional centralized server infrastructure. Tether’s Wallet Development Kit provides developers with tools for building non-custodial wallet applications across multiple blockchain networks.
In September, Tether partnered with Shiga to develop wallet solutions targeting users and institutions throughout Africa and the Gulf Cooperation Council region. These products will support USDT, Bitcoin and Tether Gold, though no specific release timeline was announced.
Tether’s artificial intelligence efforts center on QVAC, a platform enabling AI application execution directly on consumer devices. In October, the company launched an offline speech recognition model compatible with smartphones, augmented reality glasses and robotics hardware.
At the Lugano conference, Ardoino detailed additional models under development for medical assistance, language translation, computer vision and speech processing. He highlighted translation tools for 19 African languages and medical AI models featuring 1.7 billion and four billion parameters. Ardoino emphasized that Tether’s substantial profit margins enable the company to fund these research initiatives without external capital.
