The South Korean electronics powerhouse Samsung is currently engaged in negotiations to pour approximately €1 billion into Mistral, a French artificial intelligence venture, according to a Wednesday report from the Financial Times. The prospective financing round could establish the AI company’s valuation at roughly €20 billion ($22.81 billion).
Reuters indicated it was unable to independently confirm the Financial Times reporting.
If finalized, this valuation would mark a dramatic appreciation from the €11.7 billion figure Mistral commanded during its €1.7 billion Series C financing completed in September 2025 — effectively doubling its worth in less than twelve months.
Shares of Samsung Electronics (005930) gained 0.58% following the news disclosure.
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., SMSD.L
Established in 2023 by former artificial intelligence researchers who previously worked at Google DeepMind and Meta, Mistral has positioned itself at the forefront of European AI innovation. The Paris-headquartered enterprise specializes in developing advanced large language models and comprehensive AI solutions, establishing itself as Europe’s premier domestic challenger to American AI powerhouses including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.
Microsoft Strengthens Mistral Partnership
Samsung isn’t alone in pursuing closer collaboration with the French AI innovator. In a parallel development, Microsoft has formalized a strategic partnership agreement with Mistral, pledging billions in capital toward constructing and expanding computational infrastructure throughout the European continent.
Through its Azure cloud computing platform, Microsoft makes Mistral’s AI models available to its vast enterprise clientele, providing the startup with unprecedented access to global business customers.
Additionally, Mistral secured $830 million in debt financing this past March, earmarked specifically for building advanced data center facilities in both France and Sweden.
European AI Independence Accelerates
These investment discussions emerge amid intensifying efforts by European governments and corporations to establish AI capabilities that reduce reliance on American technological infrastructure.
Mistral has strategically embraced this narrative, marketing itself as a technologically sovereign European artificial intelligence alternative for commercial enterprises and governmental institutions alike.
Should it materialize, Samsung’s reported €1 billion commitment would represent among its most significant investments in European artificial intelligence development.
The Financial Times published its report on July 22, 2026. As of this writing, neither Samsung Electronics nor Mistral AI had released official public statements regarding the potential investment.
Meanwhile, Microsoft’s engagement with Mistral continues expanding, with the Redmond-based technology corporation having previously announced comprehensive commitments to European AI infrastructure development.
