Southwest Airlines has announced Amazon Web Services as its strategic cloud infrastructure partner. The carrier plans to complete a comprehensive cloud-based, artificial intelligence-powered transformation by 2028.
This agreement represents one of the most comprehensive technology transformations undertaken by a major U.S. airline. The migration encompasses digital customer interfaces, critical operational platforms, and complete data infrastructure supporting operations at over 120 airports across 12 countries.
LUV shares were hovering around $46.66 during recent trading, reflecting a 21.6% gain over the previous month. This price point slightly exceeds the Wall Street consensus price target of $45.95.
The collaboration forms a cornerstone of Southwest’s extensive strategic transformation. The Dallas-headquartered airline is transitioning from predominantly on-site infrastructure to what executives describe as an AI-powered architecture powered by AWS technology.
Lauren Woods, who serves as Southwest’s Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer, explained the initiative aims to enable teams to “move faster, make better decisions, and deliver for our customers.” The transformation spans software development methodologies to real-time operational disruption management.
Engineering Teams Embrace AWS Innovation Platform
Over 2,700 Southwest software engineers have begun leveraging Kiro, AWS’s AI-assisted development platform, to overhaul Southwest.com. According to the company, processes that previously required hours now complete within minutes.
Southwest has implemented AIDLC — the AI-Driven Development Lifecycle — a methodology where artificial intelligence agents manage portions of software development while human engineers provide oversight and validation. The airline intends to broaden agent-based capabilities throughout its operations using Amazon Quick.
Swami Sivasubramanian, Vice President of Agentic AI at AWS, noted the implementation is “accelerating innovation for 134 million travelers.”
The transformation’s magnitude is substantial. Southwest maintains a workforce exceeding 70,000 employees and transported over 134 million passengers in 2025. Operating platforms at this scale demand exceptional reliability and continuous availability.
Solid First Quarter Performance
The AWS partnership announcement coincided with robust quarterly financial results. Southwest delivered first-quarter net income of $227 million alongside record first-quarter operating revenue totaling $7.25 billion.
The carrier has simultaneously implemented additional operational modifications. These include eliminating its longstanding open seating model, restructuring its boarding procedures, and introducing four tiered fare categories.
Southwest has also committed to installing Starlink Wi-Fi connectivity on a minimum of 300 aircraft by the conclusion of 2026.
