TLDR
- Take-Two shares slipped despite extraordinary GTA VI preorder demand and online interest.
- A $760 million bookings gap overshadowed strong franchise momentum and marketing efforts.
- Netflix will debut an extended GTA VI preview ahead of the YouTube release.
- Analysts remain bullish, with consensus targets implying roughly 21% upside.
Take-Two Interactive shares declined Thursday even as excitement around Grand Theft Auto VI continued to intensify, highlighting a growing disconnect between consumer enthusiasm and investor expectations.
The stock ended the session at $241.91, down 0.45% on the day and nearly 4.6% lower than Monday’s close. The pullback came despite a sharp surge in online interest for the GTA franchise and the announcement of a new promotional push involving Netflix.
Investors appear to be focusing less on the scale of anticipation for the game and more on whether that enthusiasm will translate into the level of revenue Wall Street had been expecting.

Guidance Gap Raises Concerns
Take-Two’s fiscal 2027 bookings outlook remains well below analyst expectations. The company is guiding for fiscal 2027 net bookings of $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion. The midpoint of that range, $8.1 billion, sits roughly $760 million below consensus estimates.
That shortfall became the dominant issue for the market, overshadowing reports of exceptionally strong preorder demand for GTA VI.
Chief Executive Strauss Zelnick has defended the company’s conservative stance, noting that preorders do not guarantee completed sales and can still be canceled before launch. Management has therefore chosen not to raise guidance despite what it has described as extraordinary customer interest.
Unprecedented Demand For GTA VI
Take-Two says demand for the upcoming title has been “unprecedented” and “astonishing.” GTA VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, while a PC release has yet to be announced.
Preorders began on June 25, and industry reports suggest that the $99.99 Ultimate Edition is outperforming the standard version, an encouraging sign for potential average selling prices.
The franchise’s historical performance helps explain the excitement. Grand Theft Auto V, released in 2013, has sold more than 230 million copies worldwide, making it one of the most successful entertainment products ever created.
Search activity also reflects the growing buzz. Online interest in “Grand Theft Auto” jumped sharply in recent days, signaling that consumer attention remains extremely high as the launch approaches.
Netflix Partnership Adds Momentum
In a notable marketing move, Netflix will host an extended preview of GTA VI on August 27, releasing the footage six hours before it becomes available on YouTube.
Zelnick described Netflix as a strong marketing partner and emphasized that the exclusivity window is intentionally brief. The strategy is designed to broaden exposure rather than limit access.
The partnership gives Take-Two access to Netflix’s massive global audience and could help sustain momentum during the final months before launch.
For investors, however, the key question is whether increased visibility will materially improve bookings rather than simply generate additional online discussion.
Quarterly Results Paint Mixed Picture
Take-Two’s latest quarterly figures offered both positive and negative signals. Net bookings fell 3% year over year to $1.39 billion, while net revenue increased 2% to $1.53 billion. The company reported a GAAP net loss of $34.1 million, compared with a smaller loss a year earlier.
A significant factor was a $43.4 million impairment charge related to a canceled title.
One encouraging detail was that recurrent spending within the Grand Theft Auto ecosystem continued to rise modestly, even as mobile revenue weakened.
Wall Street Still Sees Upside
Despite the recent decline, analysts remain overwhelmingly positive on the stock. According to data compiled over the past three months, Take-Two has received 19 buy ratings and no hold or sell recommendations. The average price target is $292.71, implying roughly 21% upside from Thursday’s close.
Several major firms have targets above $300, suggesting confidence that GTA VI will eventually deliver a significant earnings and cash-flow boost.
This optimism indicates that many analysts are valuing the long-term earnings power of the GTA franchise rather than focusing solely on the current year’s bookings guidance.
Execution Now Matters Most
The market’s reaction suggests that interest alone is no longer enough. Investors are looking for evidence that Take-Two can convert record engagement into measurable financial results.
Risks remain, including the possibility of preorder cancellations, further delays, weaker-than-expected online monetization, and rising development costs.
Take-Two’s valuation still reflects substantial confidence in GTA VI’s long-term commercial potential. But until the company demonstrates that the launch can close the gap between extraordinary consumer demand and more cautious financial guidance, the stock may continue to face pressure despite one of the most anticipated entertainment releases of the decade.
