Tencent Holdings has initiated a restricted trial of Xiaowei, an artificial intelligence assistant integrated into WeChat, the company’s super app that serves more than 1.4 billion users across China. The feature is presently accessible only to a carefully selected group of users.

The Xiaowei assistant accepts instructions through either text input or voice commands. It enables users to send messages, initiate calls, and explore the vast array of mini-programs embedded within WeChat’s platform — encompassing services like food delivery, transportation booking, digital payments, and e-commerce.
Tencent’s proprietary large language model, WeLM, powers the majority of Xiaowei’s functionality. However, certain user requests are routed to DeepSeek for processing, as confirmed by Tencent’s customer service division.
In China, where WeChat operates under the name Weixin, the platform serves as an essential tool in the everyday routines of hundreds of millions of users. This extensive user base positions it as a potentially valuable channel for artificial intelligence deployment — provided Tencent executes the integration successfully.

Tencent Attempts to Narrow AI Development Gap

Earlier in the month, media reports indicated that Tencent was developing an AI agent with the capability to automate functions throughout WeChat’s mini-program infrastructure. Monday’s disclosure validates that this development has progressed to active user testing.

Alipay Conducts Parallel AI Assistant Trials
Tencent isn’t the only player making this strategic move. Ant Group, the financial technology division of Alibaba, is conducting comparable trials within Alipay, its popular digital payment platform. This agent is engineered to enable users to arrange transportation or place food orders using voice or text instructions.
These concurrent initiatives indicate that China’s super app providers view AI integration as essential for maintaining user retention and platform engagement.
WeChat has not disclosed the complete scope of capabilities that Xiaowei possesses during this testing phase. The trial remains restricted in scale, and the company has not announced when a wider release might occur.
Tencent’s customer service department independently verified the technical details regarding WeLM and DeepSeek usage, providing additional transparency beyond the primary WeChat announcement regarding what remains an early-stage offering.
