Key Highlights
- Pavel Durov, founder of Telegram, revealed plans to rebrand Toncoin back to GRAM, the original token name from the project’s initial whitepaper.
- While the blockchain will retain the TON designation, the token’s ticker symbol will undergo modification.
- Implementation of the rebrand is projected to span approximately three weeks.
- Following the announcement, TON experienced an upward price movement exceeding 11%, reaching approximately $2.10.
- The rebrand represents the fourth milestone in Durov’s comprehensive seven-step “TON Great Again” initiative.
Pavel Durov, the creator behind Telegram, revealed through his official Telegram channel that Toncoin—the primary digital asset of the TON blockchain—will undergo a name change to GRAM. This designation was initially featured in the network’s earliest whitepaper before regulatory challenges with U.S. authorities disrupted the project’s trajectory.
“We’re returning to our roots — and starting a new chapter,” Durov expressed in his message. He indicated the complete transition process would require approximately three weeks to finalize.
The underlying blockchain infrastructure will maintain its TON branding. The rebrand exclusively affects the token nomenclature.
Market data from TradingView showed TON climbing more than 11% following Durov’s disclosure. At press time, the digital asset was valued near $2.10. Additionally, the token has demonstrated approximately 19% growth across the previous seven days and roughly 60% appreciation throughout the last thirty days.

Multi-Phase Strategic Roadmap
This rebranding effort isn’t an isolated development. Durov characterized it as the fourth phase within a comprehensive seven-phase strategy he’s dubbed “TON Great Again.”

The inaugural phase involved a substantial network enhancement that accelerated TON’s performance tenfold, with block generation rates increasing sixfold. In subsequent updates, Durov disclosed that transaction costs had been reduced to essentially negligible levels.
He further announced Telegram would supplant the TON Foundation as the primary entity steering blockchain development, with Telegram assuming the position of the network’s predominant validator. When disclosed last month, this transformation was also assigned a two-to-three week implementation window.
Regulatory Background
The GRAM designation carries significant historical weight. Durov initially created the TON network before regulatory pressure compelled him to withdraw following litigation initiated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The SEC has subsequently discontinued that legal action.
With a more accommodating regulatory environment toward cryptocurrency now established in the United States, Telegram has been progressively expanding its involvement and influence within the TON ecosystem.
TON maintained its price increases on the rebrand announcement day, even while broader cryptocurrency markets experienced downward pressure. Bitcoin dipped beneath the $71,000 threshold during the same trading session.
The token’s approximately 60% climb over the preceding month suggests a notable transformation in investor perception regarding the TON ecosystem in recent trading periods.
