Key Takeaways
- VIA Labs introduced bidirectional cross-chain communication connecting Stellar’s Soroban environment with Ethereum mainnet.
- The technology enables stablecoin movement, tokenized asset transfers, and coordinated smart contract operations across both networks.
- Transactions utilizing the demonstration VIAT token complete within approximately one to three minutes.
- VIA has suspended its protocol charges for Stellar pathways throughout the initial deployment phase.
- The announcement occurred at Stellar’s Meridian event, which also featured presentations from Securitize and DTCC.
VIA Labs has deployed a cross-chain communication infrastructure connecting Stellar with Ethereum on production networks. This infrastructure enables smart contracts operating on Stellar’s Soroban environment to interact with contracts deployed on Ethereum.
The firm revealed the deployment on October 28 during Stellar’s Meridian gathering in Lisbon, Portugal. The conference took place over two days, from October 28 through 29.
Communication flows bidirectionally across the two blockchain networks. Corresponding implementations have been made available on both chains’ testing environments.
Technical Architecture of the Stellar-Ethereum Bridge
Application builders can leverage the infrastructure to transfer compatible digital assets, synchronize contract operations, and construct applications handling stablecoins or tokenized physical assets. VIA Labs highlighted international stablecoin transactions and programmatic contract triggers as potential applications.
To demonstrate transfer mechanics, VIA Labs released a demonstration asset designated VIAT. This token implements a burn-and-mint architecture for inter-chain movement.
When users initiate a transaction, the originating contract destroys the tokens. Subsequently, it generates a message containing the destination address, transfer quantity, and an optional notation field.
VIA’s validation nodes monitor the originating gateway and cryptographically sign the message. A relay mechanism then transports it to the target gateway, which validates the signatures and instructs the token contract to create an equivalent quantity.
According to the company, this mechanism maintains constant total VIAT circulation across both blockchains. Transactions typically conclude within roughly one to three minutes.
Stellar employs seven decimal positions for token quantities, whereas Ethereum utilizes 18. VIA’s interface handles the conversion, ensuring five VIAT transmitted from either network materializes as five VIAT on the opposite side.
Cost Structure, Security Framework and Development Resources
Users incur standard network transaction costs, paying in Stellar’s native asset on Stellar or gas fees on Ethereum. VIA has waived its protocol charges for Stellar pathways during the initial launch window, and its relay operators absorb expenses on the receiving blockchain.
Recipients collecting tokens on Stellar require a pre-existing, funded account. VIA cautions that assets directed to accounts that have never existed on the network may become permanently irretrievable.
The implementation utilizes VIA’s VG1 smart contract suite, which underwent examination by security auditor Hashlock. Messages must originate from contracts rather than standard user wallet addresses.
For development purposes, VIA provides a test token distribution mechanism dispensing 100 VIAT per request on Stellar testnet and Ethereum Sepolia. Application builders must refresh testnet addresses following Stellar’s regular quarterly testnet reinitializations.
This deployment follows Stellar’s September introduction of USDT0, which integrated the network with Tether-backed stablecoin movement through LayerZero infrastructure. That offering concentrates on USDT liquidity provision, whereas VIA’s platform facilitates broader contract communication capabilities.
On October 28, Securitize announced intentions to incorporate Stellar as its 17th compatible blockchain for compliant digital securities. Securitize collaborates with organizations including BlackRock, Apollo and Hamilton Lane.
DTCC also presented its forthcoming Stellar integration for tokenized financial instruments during Meridian. The organization recently activated its tokenization platform with 20 financial institutions and aims for a public network deployment in 2027.
