Andrej Karpathy, a prominent figure in artificial intelligence research, revealed on Tuesday his decision to join Anthropic. The announcement came through a statement shared on X.
“I’ve joined Anthropic,” Karpathy stated. “I think the next few years at the frontier of LLMs will be especially formative. I am very excited to join the team here and get back to R&D.”
Karpathy counts among OpenAI’s original founding members, serving as a research scientist at the organization between 2015 and 2017. Following his OpenAI tenure, he assumed the director of AI position at Tesla, where he remained from 2017 through 2022.
Karpathy’s Journey Through AI Development
During his tenure at Tesla, Karpathy spearheaded the computer vision division responsible for Tesla Autopilot development. His responsibilities also encompassed training and implementing Tesla’s proprietary inference chip for customer deployment.
He rejoined OpenAI in 2023, assuming leadership of a specialized team concentrating on midtraining processes and synthetic data generation techniques. His departure from this position occurred in 2024.
Karpathy holds a Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University. Anthropic recognizes him as among the world’s leading AI researchers.
