Bitcoin experienced significant downward pressure on Thursday, with the leading cryptocurrency shedding more than 2% of its value. The digital asset traded around $83,900 after reaching nearly $87,300 earlier in the trading week.

The selloff coincided with U.S. Treasury yields ascending to levels unseen since 2007. The 10-year benchmark yield concluded the session at 5.11%, representing a 15-basis-point jump within 24 hours.
Among major digital assets, Dogecoin sustained the most severe damage, plunging roughly 8% to trade just above the 9-cent threshold.
Catalysts Behind the Yield Surge
Multiple economic forces converged this week to drive borrowing costs upward. Energy markets emerged as a primary driver of the movement.
Brent crude oil rallied more than 4%, approaching the $104 per barrel mark. This reversed a six-day decline that had temporarily calmed inflation concerns among market participants.
Economic indicators added additional upward pressure on yields. S&P Global released flash data indicating U.S. economic output expanded at its most robust pace in more than five years.
The composite purchasing managers’ index climbed to 58.4, representing its strongest reading since July 2021. Bitcoin’s most pronounced decline occurred immediately following the release of this economic data.
During afternoon trading, the U.S. Treasury Department conducted a $70 billion auction of five-year notes. Demand proved lackluster, with the sale concluding at a 5.033% yield—the highest auction result since 2006.
Investors demanded additional compensation to absorb the debt issuance, indicating diminished enthusiasm for government securities at prevailing rate levels.
Broader Cryptocurrency Market Response
Elevated yields diminish the appeal of non-yielding assets. Bitcoin and most digital currencies fall into this classification, making them vulnerable to rate-driven selloffs.
ZEC, XRP, and HYPE each registered losses ranging from 5% to 6%. Meanwhile, Ether, Solana, and BNB declined between 2% and 3%.
XRP extended its losses as trading progressed, ultimately falling 7.5% to $1.5052. Cardano retreated 7.1%, while the $TRUMP memecoin tumbled 11.4%.
Bitcoin now trades beneath the $85,000 threshold. Ledn co-founder Mauricio Di Bartolomeo highlighted substantial call option positioning at that price point in advance of Friday’s approximately $14 billion options expiration on Deribit.
The Treasury yield surge extended beyond American borders. Japanese 10-year government bond yields similarly reached a three-decade peak on Thursday.
Market expectations for additional rate increases intensified following the Federal Reserve’s 25-basis-point hike last week. The central bank’s reaffirmation of its 2% inflation objective was interpreted by traders as potentially signaling further tightening ahead.
The oil market’s recovery linked directly to remarks from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, he delivered criticism directed at the United States and President Donald Trump.
Notwithstanding Thursday’s decline, bitcoin maintains positive performance for September. Market participants had responded favorably to enhanced regulatory clarity from U.S. authorities earlier this month.
The Securities and Exchange Commission’s decision to authorize a five-year exemption for blockchain-based equity offerings had generated momentum across alternative cryptocurrencies. This development occurred despite the Clarity Act’s failure to advance through Congressional approval.
