On Monday, OpenAI announced that its advertising operation within ChatGPT has achieved a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate. The firm characterized this achievement as validation of its multi-faceted revenue strategy as it moves toward a public offering.
The advertising division has been operational for approximately 200 days. It complements existing income sources such as enterprise agreements, individual subscriptions, and API access fees.
The company initially piloted advertising within ChatGPT in the United States during February. This strategic decision attracted scrutiny from competitor Anthropic, which featured OpenAI’s advertising initiative as the centerpiece of its inaugural Super Bowl commercial.
Global Expansion Reaches More Than 40 Markets
The ChatGPT advertising service has expanded to over 40 nations worldwide. Monday’s announcement included the launch of its self-service advertising platform for marketing professionals in India, European territories, the Middle East, and North African regions.
OpenAI introduced advertising capabilities in India the previous week, representing one of ChatGPT’s most significant user bases. The initial launch featured fifty participating brands and collaborations with major agencies like WPP and Omnicom. Indian advertisers gain access to the self-service ad management platform on September 4, with daily spending requirements starting around $7.60.
Promotional content appears exclusively for individuals using the no-cost tier and those with Go subscription memberships. The company emphasized that all advertisements carry clear identification and maintain the integrity of ChatGPT’s response generation. Marketing partners have no visibility into users’ confidential conversations.
Earlier this year, the organization introduced cost-per-click payment structures. This innovation provided advertisers an alternative billing method charged only when users engage with ads, complementing the existing cost-per-thousand-impressions framework. Additionally, OpenAI eliminated the previous $50,000 minimum expenditure threshold upon releasing its self-service Ads Manager platform to all American businesses.
Financial Performance and Public Offering Timeline
OpenAI has set an advertising revenue target of $2.5 billion for this fiscal period. The organization is simultaneously projecting total annualized revenue surpassing $40 billion, representing approximately twice its performance level from late 2025.
During the second quarter of 2026, the company generated $6.7 billion in revenue, marking an increase from the $5.7 billion recorded in the previous quarter.
The organization recorded a net deficit of $38.5 billion throughout 2025 against $13.07 billion in revenue. Currently, it is advancing preparations for its scheduled 2027 initial public offering while facing expectations to demonstrate the merit of its $852 billion valuation to potential investors.
Looking ahead, OpenAI indicated its roadmap includes extending advertising availability to additional geographic markets while introducing innovative ad formats, purchasing mechanisms, and analytics capabilities. The company also expressed intentions to develop fresh opportunities for commercial entities to engage with users throughout the ChatGPT platform.
