- Industry analysts project the worldwide memory supply crunch, fueled by artificial intelligence requirements, will persist until 2027 at minimum
CXMT stock climbed 3.4% to reach CNY 55.29 this past Friday following a Reuters report indicating the Chinese semiconductor manufacturer intends to venture into the NAND flash memory sector, moving beyond its established DRAM operations.

According to the report, which draws from individuals with knowledge of the situation, CXMT intends to create a research and development manufacturing line dedicated to NAND flash memory at its newly constructed Beijing facility. Additionally, the corporation has established a research center in China’s capital, where NAND technology advancement is documented as one of its ongoing initiatives.
The strategic timing is significant. Artificial intelligence applications have triggered a worldwide shortage of memory components that sector leaders anticipate will continue through 2027 at the earliest.
Intensifying Market Rivalry
This strategic expansion would position CXMT in direct competition with established industry titans. Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron currently control the vast majority of the worldwide NAND flash market. Within China’s borders, YMTC has historically served as the nation’s primary NAND producer.
Historically, CXMT has concentrated its efforts on DRAM production, whereas YMTC specialized in NAND technology. Currently, both corporations are expanding into each other’s core markets as constrained supply maintains favorable pricing conditions and Chinese demand continues expanding.
CXMT has already initiated conversations with prospective buyers regarding its NAND strategy. Among these potential partners is a recently formed startup that intends to incorporate CXMT chips into storage solutions designed specifically for artificial intelligence infrastructure and supercomputing applications.
The Strategic Rationale Behind Flash Memory Expansion
Memory chip producers worldwide have been channeling resources toward DRAM and high-bandwidth memory solutions tailored for AI workloads. This industry-wide reallocation has resulted in reduced NAND production investment, creating supply constraints and creating opportunities for new market participants.
CXMT’s expansion into NAND flash would diversify its product portfolio and expand its addressable market. The strategic move also enables the corporation to serve increasing demand from Chinese purchasers seeking domestically sourced alternatives to international suppliers.
The Reuters coverage indicated that the timeline for the R&D production line’s operational launch remains undetermined. Similarly, whether CXMT will transition from experimental production to full-scale commercial manufacturing has not been disclosed.
At the time the report was published, CXMT stock was changing hands at CNY 55.29, representing a daily gain of 3.4%.
