Key Highlights
- Coinbase now offers fixed-rate USDC borrowing with bitcoin as collateral via Morpho Midnight protocol.
- Users can secure predetermined interest rates and set maturity dates at loan origination.
- This fixed-rate option complements Coinbase’s current variable-rate lending through Morpho Blue.
- The exchange reports over $1.4 billion in active loans secured by approximately $3 billion in collateral assets.
- The integration sees Coinbase managing user interface, Morpho powering the protocol infrastructure, and Base hosting settlement.
Coinbase has rolled out fixed-rate loans collateralized by bitcoin, providing customers with an alternative method to access USDC liquidity without liquidating their cryptocurrency holdings. The offering operates on Morpho Midnight and provides borrowers with transparent interest costs and repayment timelines from inception.
This latest addition broadens Coinbase’s onchain credit ecosystem, which currently features variable-rate borrowing via Morpho Blue. Platform users now have flexibility to select between fixed and variable loan structures based on their individual risk preferences and financial planning needs.
Morpho Midnight Integration Brings Predictable Lending Terms
Morpho introduced Midnight on the Base network in July, aiming to deliver fixed interest rates and predetermined maturity schedules to decentralized lending markets. Historically, most DeFi lending platforms have operated with fluctuating interest rates that adjust continuously.
According to Morpho, Coinbase represents the first major retail-focused platform to implement Morpho Midnight loans at significant scale. While market makers utilize the protocol and Tenor Labs previously built a lending solution using Midnight, Coinbase’s integration marks a watershed moment for consumer adoption.
The platform determines interest rates through supply-and-demand dynamics via an onchain order book mechanism. Coinbase has not yet revealed the exact rates currently offered to borrowers.
Presently, users can select loan maturity dates aligned with either the current month’s end or the subsequent month’s conclusion. Coinbase designates the month’s final Friday as the official maturity point.
Borrowers are obligated to settle their USDC debt before reaching maturity. Failure to repay allows lenders to initiate claims against the bitcoin collateral securing the obligation.
Coinbase Lending Platform Surpasses $1.4 Billion Milestone
Coinbase’s established variable-rate lending service has experienced rapid expansion. The platform currently hosts over $1.4 billion in active loan balances supported by roughly $3 billion in pledged collateral.
These variable-rate loans operate through Morpho Blue, the protocol’s more established floating-rate lending system. According to Morpho, Blue currently facilitates approximately $5.2 billion in outstanding credit and maintains around $16 billion in total deposits spanning all platform integrations.
Morpho Midnight remains considerably smaller in comparison, holding approximately $30 million in deposits during its continued expansion phase. The Coinbase partnership could substantially accelerate adoption by connecting the protocol with an extensive retail user base.
The operational framework distributes responsibilities among partners. Coinbase oversees the customer-facing application experience, Morpho supplies the underlying lending technology, and Base provides the settlement layer for all transactions.
Accessing Liquidity While Maintaining Bitcoin Exposure
The product’s primary value proposition enables users to unlock capital without surrendering their bitcoin positions. Rather than converting bitcoin into fiat currency or stablecoins, customers can pledge their holdings as collateral and receive USDC loans against them.
Jacob Frantz, Coinbase’s yield and investments product lead, emphasized that fixed-rate borrowing empowers users with enhanced control over credit management. The predictable rate structure may particularly attract borrowers who value knowing their exact financing costs upfront rather than navigating variable rate environments.
Morpho envisions Midnight’s evolution beyond bitcoin-collateralized lending. The protocol could eventually accommodate structured credit instruments and loans backed by tokenized real-world assets.
Additional platform integrations are in development, though Morpho has not disclosed specific partners or implementation schedules. Currently, Coinbase users benefit from expanded onchain borrowing capabilities as fixed-rate DeFi lending continues converging with traditional financial products.
