The partnership extends through 2030 and secures a substantial portion of the fiber optic materials Zayo anticipates requiring during this timeframe. For Zayo, this arrangement eliminates a significant supply chain uncertainty from its extensive construction roadmap.
Zayo has outlined plans to expand its infrastructure by 15,000 route miles before 2030 concludes. Over 8,000 of these miles will consist of newly constructed long-haul fiber, developed through a strategic collaboration with NVIDIA.
According to CEO Steve Smith, artificial intelligence infrastructure is fundamentally transforming the location and speed requirements for network capacity deployment. Securing fiber supply in advance, he explained, ensures that material shortages won’t create construction delays.
Artificial intelligence serves as the primary catalyst for this agreement. Data center operators and cloud service providers are requiring larger volumes of fiber, delivered more quickly and with higher density than previous generations. This demand is creating ripple effects throughout raw material supply networks.

Corning’s Senior Vice President Steve Mitchell emphasized that artificial intelligence is substantially increasing both the volume and concentration of fiber optic cable required throughout modern networks. He characterized the partnership as merging Corning’s optical innovation with Zayo’s networking capabilities to construct physical AI infrastructure on an unprecedented scale.
Troy Lupe, serving as Zayo’s Chief Network Officer, emphasized that long-haul network development requires years of strategic planning, regulatory approvals, and implementation. Securing fiber supply commitments early in the process eliminates a crucial uncertainty from the timeline.
Zayo’s existing infrastructure encompasses a network spanning 32 million fiber miles and 224,000 route miles throughout North America. The company provides connectivity to over 400 markets worldwide, supporting telecommunications carriers, cloud platforms, data center facilities, corporate clients, educational institutions, and government agencies.
Building Next-Generation Infrastructure for AI Workloads
The partnership with NVIDIA represents a significant component of the overall expansion strategy. More than half of the planned new route miles are connected to this long-haul infrastructure project, demonstrating how hyperscale technology demand is directly influencing physical network capital allocation.
From Corning’s perspective, the agreement represents a long-term supply commitment rather than a single transaction. It provides the fiber optics manufacturer with improved demand visibility extending through the remainder of the decade, despite investor reaction being somewhat muted on the announcement day.
