Elon Musk’s ambition to transform X into a comprehensive “everything app” modeled after China’s WeChat took a major leap forward with the broader launch of X Money, a native banking platform integrated into the social network.
The X Money platform enables users to maintain deposit balances, execute peer-to-peer transactions, settle bills, initiate wire transfers, and dispatch physical checks ā all within the application environment. Following an initial June rollout restricted to elite subscribers, the service has now opened to a wider user population.
Cross River Bank, a New Jersey financial technology institution, serves as the deposit custodian, with accounts carrying FDIC insurance coverage up to the standard $250,000 limit. The bank characterized this deployment as America’s inaugural government-backed banking service embedded within a social networking platform.
According to Cross River, the partnership encompasses complete banking infrastructure provisioning for X Money, spanning payment processing networks, FDIC-protected interest-generating accounts, and Visa-branded debit card issuance. The institution specializes in creating embedded financial solutions for fintech companies across payments, cards, credit, and related services.
Exceptional Interest Rate Offering
The X Money service features an annual percentage yield reaching 6% on deposited funds. This rate substantially surpasses the approximately 4% to 5% yields available from leading US high-yield savings alternatives, and dwarfs the minimal interest rates typical at major traditional banking institutions.
Premium+ tier subscribers receive the maximum rate without additional requirements. Standard Premium members must satisfy direct deposit criteria to access the top yield.
The attractive rate captured Congressional scrutiny. Senator Elizabeth Warren addressed Musk in an April correspondence, questioning the revenue model supporting such elevated yields. She additionally referenced prior FDIC regulatory actions against Cross River concerning its loan origination operations.
Multi-Year Development Timeline
Musk initially articulated his “everything app” concept for X in 2022 during the Twitter acquisition. He announced X Money had commenced limited beta trials in May 2025, emphasizing the necessity for meticulous handling of customer deposits. An expanded external beta phase launched in March 2026.
Throughout this period, X secured money transmission licenses across more than 40 states and completed registration with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network to facilitate peer-to-peer payment operations.
The service now enters direct competition with PayPal’s Venmo application, Block’s Cash App platform, and SoFi for consumers seeking consolidated money management solutions.
Notably absent from X Money’s launch communications was any mention of cryptocurrency or stablecoin integration, despite Cross River’s provision of digital asset infrastructure for other fintech partners.
The platform leverages X’s existing audience of millions of users, potentially providing a significant advantage in user acquisition. How effectively this audience transitions into engaged banking customers will determine long-term success.
Cross River positioned this launch as the initial phase of an extensive financial services buildout, with underlying systems engineered to accommodate future product expansion.
