The Strawmap functions as a collaborative planning document outlining potential protocol improvements extending to 2029. Rather than a definitive timeline, it serves as an evolving blueprint that development teams can adjust based on ongoing research findings.
Privacy Elevated to Fundamental Protocol Layer
Unlike the 2023 version, which contained no dedicated privacy initiatives, Ethereum’s current development plan positions privacy as a foundational pillar equivalent to censorship resistance and network security.
Buterin outlined multiple privacy-enhancing mechanisms currently being evaluated, such as keyed nonces, recent roots, lean privacy pools, and wormhole technologies. These features aim to minimize the transaction data visible to external observers.
Components of FOCIL (Fork-Choice Enforced Inclusion Lists) have also been incorporated into the privacy framework. FOCIL seeks to reduce block builder censorship power by strengthening transaction inclusion guarantees, and it’s anticipated to become a major component of the forthcoming Hegota hard fork.
Quantum Computing Threat Escalates to Primary Concern
While quantum security received minimal attention in the 2023 roadmap, it has now emerged as a front-and-center consideration in Ethereum’s strategic planning.
Ethereum relies on cryptographic algorithms that could potentially be compromised by sufficiently advanced quantum computing systems. Transitioning to quantum-resistant alternatives while maintaining reasonable signature sizes and transaction costs represents a significant technical hurdle.
The updated roadmap examines LeanSPHINCS signatures, signature aggregation techniques, and zkzk frameworks as potential components of a quantum-resistant architecture. Recent research from an Ethereum developer indicated that implementing wallet-level quantum protection could cost approximately $0.07 per account.
Native Rollup Integration Enters Active Development
Native rollups were notably absent from the 2023 roadmap due to the immature state of zero-knowledge proof technology at that time.
Currently, rollups function as independent layer-2 solutions that execute transactions off the main chain before submitting cryptographic proofs to Ethereum’s base layer. Native rollup architecture would integrate portions of this verification mechanism directly into Ethereum’s core protocol.
Buterin noted that Ethereum’s scaling strategy is evolving away from a one-size-fits-all approach. Future development may emphasize purpose-built, highly optimized systems tailored for specific applications such as token transfers, decentralized exchange operations, and privacy-focused transactions.
Blob and gas futures markets represent another novel addition to the roadmap. These financial instruments would enable users or layer-2 networks to secure guaranteed access to Ethereum’s data availability or computational resources in advance.
Buterin also suggested that artificial intelligence could facilitate comprehensive formal verification of protocol code at scale. Recursive STARK proofs may ultimately span Ethereum’s execution, consensus, and data availability layers.
The Ethereum virtual machine itself may undergo architectural changes over time, with leanISA and RISC-V mentioned as potential successors, though Buterin acknowledged these considerations remain premature for the current Strawmap iteration.
