The most significant market development on Friday, August 14, was Reddit’s confirmation for S&P 500 inclusion. The popular social platform is scheduled to officially enter the prestigious index prior to market open on August 18.
The social media giant will take over the spot currently held by AvalonBay Communities, following its acquisition by Equity Residential. The merged entity will maintain its S&P 500 presence under the newly formed Vivmark Residential brand.
Reddit shares rocketed 12% higher following the announcement. S&P 500 inclusion typically generates significant buying pressure from passive index funds that must match the benchmark’s composition.
Applied Materials Declines Despite Strong Performance
Applied Materials delivered impressive third-quarter financial results, yet shares still retreated roughly 5%. Sales increased 25% compared to the prior year, reaching $9.12 billion and exceeding analyst expectations of $9.02 billion.
The semiconductor equipment maker posted adjusted EPS of $3.50, surpassing the Street’s $3.42 projection. Forward guidance for the fourth quarter also came in above consensus expectations, with revenue projected at a midpoint of $10.25 billion compared to the $9.55 billion analyst forecast.
Company leadership increased their semiconductor systems revenue projections for 2026, citing AI-fueled growth and improved clarity regarding 2027 performance.
Nevertheless, the stock faced selling pressure. With Applied Materials already up nearly 98% for the year, some market participants seemed to anticipate an even more impressive beat. Additionally, the company revealed a $220 million unrealized loss on investments during the reporting period.
Sandisk shares advanced more than 4% in early trading after J.P. Morgan reinstated coverage with an Overweight recommendation and established a $2,250 price objective.
Nu Holdings Delivers Impressive Results
Nu Holdings, the Latin American digital banking platform, surged 9% following robust second-quarter performance. Sales climbed 56% year-over-year to $5.88 billion, significantly exceeding the $5.48 billion analyst consensus.
The company reported GAAP earnings of $0.22 per share, beating the projected $0.19. Net interest income experienced a 65% year-over-year surge to $3.69 billion.
The digital bank added 4 million new customers throughout the quarter, pushing its total user base to 139 million. Monthly average revenue per active customer increased to $17.10, up from $12.50 in the same period last year.
Globant experienced a difficult session, tumbling 13% after the software services firm posted adjusted earnings beneath forecasts and issued cautionary guidance regarding revenue growth challenges ahead.
The company’s updated full-year 2026 revenue outlook calls for $2.428 billion to $2.462 billion, representing a potential decline of 1.1% to modest growth of just 0.3%.
Multiple artificial intelligence-focused equities moved into positive territory. Intel, Marvell, and Micron each registered increases ranging from 1% to 2% during premarket hours.
Defense and unmanned aerial vehicle manufacturers also advanced following the Trump administration’s announcement of new tariffs on drone imports. Unusual Machines, Ondas, Kratos, and AeroVironment all posted gains.
Broader stock index futures showed minimal movement as market participants continued digesting softer inflation readings following Thursday’s wholesale price data that came in below expectations.
