In a significant move to safeguard Bitcoin’s long-term security, Galaxy Digital has announced a commitment of up to $5 million through its newly established Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative. The cryptocurrency financial services company is now accepting applications for grants as part of this forward-looking program.
Today, Bitcoin relies on elliptic curve cryptography to protect wallets and validate transactions. While no existing computer possesses the capability to compromise this encryption within a reasonable time frame, quantum computing technology is progressing rapidly. Experts emphasize that proactive measures must begin immediately.
Should a sufficiently advanced quantum computer emerge, it could threaten approximately 6.9 million bitcoin, as indicated by CryptoQuant’s analysis. Based on today’s market values, this represents roughly $461 billion in assets.
Alex Thorn, Galaxy’s head of firmwide research, highlighted a concerning disparity between quantum computing’s rapid advancement and the Bitcoin development community’s relatively slow response to this challenge. The initiative seeks to bridge this critical gap.
Funding Objectives and Scope
The program will provide financial backing to developers and researchers focusing on quantum-resistant transaction frameworks, post-quantum signature methodologies, and tools for transitioning wallets to safer protocols. Additionally, the fund will finance thorough security evaluations of proposed technical solutions.
Galaxy will distribute grants based on achievement of specific milestones. The firm has invited other organizations to participate through co-funding opportunities or by contributing research expertise.
To ensure rigorous evaluation of proposals, Galaxy has established a Quantum Advisory Council. The founding council members are Barry Sanders from the University of Calgary, Damien BƩrubƩ, an MIT Sea Grant Knauss Fellow, and Eran Tromer from Boston University.
In 2024, the National Institute of Standards and Technology completed its initial post-quantum cryptography standards. The U.S. government has mandated that federal agencies must prepare defenses against quantum-based attacks by 2031.
President Trump has issued two executive orders addressing quantum computing: one mandating the development of a large-scale quantum computer, and another focused on protecting federal infrastructure from quantum threats. The Commerce Department has announced plans to distribute over $2 billion to nine quantum computing firms.
Broader Industry Mobilization
Galaxy Digital’s initiative is part of a growing industry movement. Coinbase established its own independent quantum computing advisory council in January and released a comprehensive 51-page analysis in April. Their assessment concluded that while quantum computers don’t present an immediate danger, preparatory work should commence without delay.
During its fourth-quarter earnings announcement in February, Michael Saylor’s Strategy revealed a Bitcoin Security Program targeting similar concerns.
Development efforts are progressing at the protocol level through proposals BIP-360 and BIP-361. Parallel initiatives are underway for Ethereum and the XRP Ledger to address quantum vulnerabilities.
The decentralized nature of Bitcoin’s governance structure presents unique challenges. Even after consensus is reached on technical solutions, implementing them across the entire ecosystemāincluding developers, wallet providers, exchanges, and end usersācould require several years.
