Google is implementing two significant transformations that will impact billions of users around the globe. The tech giant is phasing out Google Assistant to make way for its advanced AI platform, Gemini, while simultaneously eliminating multiple Gmail capabilities connected to external email services.
Beginning September 4, 2026, Google will initiate the migration from Google Assistant to Gemini across Android smartphones, tablets, Wear OS smartwatches, audio devices, and Android Auto-enabled vehicles. The deployment will unfold gradually over a span of several weeks.
After the migration completes on any given device, users will have no option to revert to Google Assistant.
Why Google Is Making the Switch
Google initially revealed its intention to transition users from Google Assistant to Gemini in March 2025. Brian Marquardt, Senior Director of Product Management, noted that millions of users had already voluntarily adopted the new platform.
Gemini is engineered to perform far beyond simple voice-activated tasks. It possesses capabilities for content creation, managing follow-up inquiries, information synthesis, and seamless integration throughout Google’s ecosystem of applications and platforms.
Google Assistant, which debuted in 2016, was created for straightforward functions such as reminder creation, weather inquiries, and smart home device management. Gemini, unveiled in 2023, is architected for extended, sophisticated conversational interactions.
During Q2 2026, the Gemini application recorded 950 million monthly active users. The platform experienced a tripling of daily active users when compared to the same period the prior year.
Google continues to broaden its Gemini model portfolio. The organization recently launched Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber, is currently evaluating Gemini 3.5 Pro, and has initiated pre-training procedures for Gemini 4.
Gmail Changes Coming in January 2027
In a separate announcement, Google verified it will discontinue two Gmail functionalities. The “Send as” feature, which enables users to dispatch emails from external accounts such as Yahoo, Outlook, and Hotmail through the Gmail interface, will cease operations in January 2027.
Gmailify, a feature that extends Gmail capabilities including spam protection and inbox management to non-Gmail email addresses, will likewise be terminated simultaneously.
Google stated the choice was driven by priorities to maintain Gmail’s security infrastructure and minimize ongoing maintenance requirements. Users will be notified through in-product alerts during the Q3 2026 announcement window.
The transition timeline spans Q3 and Q4 2026. New feature configurations may face limitations during this interval, though current implementations will remain functional until January 2027.
Google has not disclosed timing for when the Gemini deployment will reach Google TV, Google Home smart speakers, or smart display products. These devices currently continue operating with Google Assistant.
