During Monday’s Hot Chips conference, IBM unveiled a groundbreaking dual-architecture mainframe processor, representing the industry’s first chip capable of natively executing both IBM and Arm workloads concurrently.
Engineered specifically for upcoming IBM Z and LinuxONE platforms, the processor enables enterprises to operate Arm-native Linux environments alongside traditional z/OS and Linux on IBM Z simultaneously.
Manufactured on cutting-edge 2 nanometer process technology, the chip integrates 11 high-performance computing cores. Each core possesses the unique capability to process both Arm and IBM Z instruction sets concurrently.
Operating at frequencies surpassing 5.7 GHz, the processor delivers exceptional performance suitable for demanding enterprise applications.
IBM embedded AI inference accelerators within the silicon for real-time fraud detection during transactions. Additionally, the design incorporates a specialized on-chip data processing unit optimized for I/O acceleration alongside an extensive cache hierarchy.

Mohamed Awad from Arm observed that an increasing portion of the computing sector is transitioning toward Arm architecture as artificial intelligence adoption accelerates. He emphasized that integrating Arm computing capabilities into IBM Z and LinuxONE systems extends this industry shift into mission-critical enterprise environments.
The processor architecture incorporates silicon-level fault detection and recovery mechanisms, sophisticated encryption technologies, protected key management systems, and AI acceleration hardware.
