MediaTek has introduced a pair of advanced smartphone processors, headlined by a flagship model manufactured using TSMC’s cutting-edge 2-nanometre technology. The Taiwanese semiconductor company positions this launch as a strategic effort to capture greater market share in the premium smartphone segment.
The premier offering, dubbed the Dimensity 9600 Pro, represents MediaTek’s inaugural mobile chip fabricated on TSMC’s 2nm node. Alongside it, the Dimensity 9600M utilizes TSMC’s 3nm manufacturing process and caters to a wider spectrum of flagship devices.
According to MediaTek, handsets featuring these new processors will hit the market in the near future. The chipmaker has established relationships with prominent Chinese smartphone manufacturers such as Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo.
Enhanced Neural Processing Capabilities
The Dimensity 9600 Pro integrates a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) designed for on-device artificial intelligence workloads. MediaTek emphasizes that this specialized processor enables generative AI operations locally, eliminating the need for cloud-based processing.
According to the company’s claims, the NPU demonstrates a 51% improvement in prompt processing latency before AI model inference begins, compared to the prior generation. MediaTek has not disclosed additional technical specifications regarding the methodology behind this performance metric.
This strategic move into the premium processor market intensifies MediaTek’s rivalry with Qualcomm, which has maintained a commanding position in the high-performance Android smartphone chip sector. Notably, MediaTek’s market capitalization exceeded Qualcomm’s earlier in the current year.
JC Hsu, who serves as corporate senior vice president at MediaTek, indicated the company is collaborating with device manufacturers to manage end-user pricing despite escalating costs associated with AI-capable hardware.
“As the overall market moves to higher prices, I believe there is still room for us to increase our share of the flagship segment,” Hsu said.
Strategic Pivot Toward Cloud AI Solutions
This premium processor announcement coincides with MediaTek’s broader diversification strategy beyond mobile devices. The semiconductor firm is actively developing AI acceleration hardware targeting data centre operators and cloud service providers.
The company’s debut AI accelerator specifically engineered for a prominent American cloud platform is scheduled to enter volume manufacturing during the final quarter of 2026.
In recent weeks, MediaTek secured $3.9 billion through a convertible bond transaction. Nvidia contributed the lion’s share at $3.5 billion. Alphabet, which maintains a longstanding collaboration with MediaTek on AI infrastructure projects, also participated as an investor.
This chip unveiling arrives as smartphone pricing continues its upward trajectory. Apple’s recently announced foldable iPhone model carries a starting price reaching $3,199 in the United States for maximum storage configurations.
MediaTek remains on schedule to commence mass production of its cloud-focused AI accelerator before 2026 concludes.
