Micron Technology (MU) shares advanced nearly 2% to $942.06 during Thursday’s premarket session, propelled by positive developments from India and strengthening market sentiment across technology sectors. Futures contracts for the Nasdaq climbed 1.05% while S&P 500 futures added 0.82%, creating favorable conditions for chip stocks.
The share price gain followed Micron’s announcement that its $2.75 billion semiconductor assembly and testing complex in Sanand, Gujarat has launched commercial operations. The facility is currently delivering completed DRAM and NAND memory solutions to clients across multiple continents.
According to CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, the Sanand operation’s production capacity already surpasses the memory requirements for India’s complete laptop market. The company has completed initial shipments of India-manufactured memory modules to Dell Technologies, supporting laptop production within the country.
Unlike traditional fabrication plants, this facility concentrates on backend operations. It receives sophisticated DRAM and NAND wafers manufactured at Micron’s global production sites and transforms them into completed memory and storage components. When operating at full capacity, the initial phase will encompass over 500,000 square feet of cleanroom infrastructure.
Production projections indicate Micron will assemble and test tens of millions of semiconductor chips at this location throughout the current year. By 2027, that volume is anticipated to expand into the hundreds of millions.
Advanced AI Memory Module Under Development
Micron’s strategic expansion in India aligns with the company’s emphasis on artificial intelligence memory solutions. In mid-September, the chipmaker unveiled a 512GB DDR5 RDIMM achieving speeds reaching 9,200 MT/s. Both Advanced Micro Devices and Intel are conducting validation testing on the module. Mass production is targeted to commence during the latter half of 2027.
Mehrotra articulated the market transformation: “The world is going to need memory that is faster, denser, and far more efficient at power. And Micron builds that memory.”
Micron’s direct workforce in India exceeds 7,000 employees. Engineering teams operating from Bangalore and Hyderabad have generated contributions to over 3,700 patents, innovations and technical disclosures.
September 30 Earnings Release Approaching
Investors will focus attention on MU’s fiscal 2026 fourth-quarter financial results scheduled for September 30. Wall Street forecasts earnings per share of approximately $31.30, representing substantial growth from $3.03 during the comparable quarter one year earlier. Revenue projections stand at $50.78 billion, a significant increase from $11.31 billion in the prior-year period.
Goldman Sachs analyst James Schneider continues with a Hold rating and established a $1,100 price objective. His projections include quarterly revenue of $51.9 billion, approximately 3% above consensus estimates, alongside EPS of $32.54 and gross margin of 87.3%.
Looking ahead to fiscal 2027’s first quarter, Schneider anticipates low-teens sequential revenue expansion, attributed to favorable product mix and pricing strength.
From a technical perspective, MU trades 48.8% above its 200-day moving average of $632.56. Resistance emerges near the $1,012 level, while support is established around $887.50. The Relative Strength Index registers 46.88, indicating neutral momentum in the near term.
Analyst sentiment remains overwhelmingly positive with a Strong Buy consensus on MU stock, comprised of 29 Buy recommendations against a single Hold rating. The average price objective of approximately $1,521 suggests potential upside near 69%. Year-to-date, MU shares have surged 225%.
Mizuho reaffirmed an Outperform rating in August with a $1,300 price target. New Street Research elevated its rating to Buy with a $1,250 objective. Citigroup maintained its Buy recommendation with a $1,150 forecast.
