Microsoft Opens First Data Center at Wisconsin AI Campus
Microsoft completed construction of its first data center at the Mount Pleasant campus in Wisconsin. The facility, known as Fairwater, is now fully operational and supports advanced artificial intelligence workloads. The company advanced a major phase of its regional infrastructure expansion.
The new facility houses computing systems designed for large-scale AI development and processing. Microsoft stated that the campus will support future innovation and long-term technology growth. The project strengthens the company’s capacity to meet rising demand for AI services.
The Wisconsin campus forms part of Microsoft’s broader investment strategy across the United States. The company has committed more than $7.3 billion to develop multiple data centers in Mount Pleasant. Wisconsin has become an important location within Microsoft’s growing AI network.
Microsoft Expands Long-Term Investment in Mount Pleasant
Microsoft has already started work on a second data center at the same campus. The company expects construction of that facility to finish in 2028. Once completed, the campus will significantly increase its computing and operational capacity.
The company currently employs about 375 workers at the Mount Pleasant site. Workforce levels are expected to reach approximately 800 employees after the second facility opens. The expansion will create additional skilled jobs within the region.
Local officials identified the project as a major economic development milestone. The campus strengthens Mount Pleasant’s position as a technology and infrastructure hub. The investment contributes to long-term business activity across Racine County.
Data Center Growth Strengthens Local Economy
Microsoft’s facilities in Mount Pleasant carry an assessed value of about $1.224 billion. Based on assessment data, the company generates an annual property tax bill of roughly $19.75 million. Microsoft ranks among the largest taxpayers in the area.
The company has also received approval to construct up to 15 additional data centers during the next decade. Those future facilities will continue expanding the campus footprint in Wisconsin. Union labor remains involved in the construction process across the development.
The project operates within a tax incremental financing district established by local authorities. Revenue generated from the development supports infrastructure improvements, including roads and sewer systems. The data center expansion contributes both technological capacity and public infrastructure funding for the community.
