Nebius (NBIS) stock fell despite a major US expansion milestone, as traders reacted to broader volatility around AI infrastructure names. NBIS closed down 3.76% at $179.11 on Tuesday, after a choppy session. However, the stock recovered slightly after hours to $180.10, up 0.55%.
Nebius Begins First Gigawatt-Scale US AI Campus
Nebius broke ground on its flagship AI factory campus in Independence, Missouri, on May 12, 2026. The project marks the company’s first gigawatt-scale digital infrastructure development in the United States. It also expands Nebius’ existing footprint in the Kansas City region.
The AI cloud company plans to build a multi-building campus across about 400 acres in eastern Independence. Construction of the first phase has already started, and the site will support large-scale AI workloads. The campus gives Nebius a larger base for cloud computing demand in the US market.
Nebius said the facility will support long-term growth while reducing local impact. The company plans to limit water use, contain noise, reduce light impact, and protect local ratepayers. Besides, the project includes community engagement programs tied to education and workforce development.
Missouri Project Adds Jobs, Tax Revenue, and Local Support
The Independence AI factory is expected to create about 1,200 construction jobs during development. Nebius said most of those roles will come from local union building trades. Moreover, the project should create 130 permanent high-tech jobs once it reaches full operation.
The company also expects the investment to generate $650 million in tax payments over 20 years. These payments will support local school districts and taxing jurisdictions. In addition, Independence School District could receive more than $463 million during that period.
Nebius has already started local support efforts before full construction begins. The company donated funds to clear school meal debt in Independence and Ft. Osage school districts. It also reached an initial agreement with Metropolitan Community College on AI literacy and workforce development.
NBIS Shares Fall Despite AI Infrastructure Growth Push
The market reaction came as AI infrastructure companies face sharper scrutiny after strong sector gains. Nebius continues to position itself as a full-stack AI cloud provider for developers and enterprises. Its platform supports data work, model training, and production deployment.
The Missouri campus gives Nebius a larger US operating base and strengthens its AI cloud expansion plan. However, Tuesday’s stock drop showed that major growth announcements do not always lift shares immediately. Consequently, NBIS ended the session lower while the company moved ahead with a long-term US buildout.
