Novo Nordisk is embarking on a significant transformation. The Copenhagen-based pharmaceutical company revealed Monday its plans to rebrand as “Novo” while simultaneously restructuring its internal culture in an effort to regain ground in the competitive obesity medication market.
Shares of NVO were down 2.14% during trading hours, extending the year’s losses to approximately 15%, despite the oral formulation of Wegovy achieving more than 3 million prescriptions by June.
The rebranding initiative revolves around “Lasting Health Starts Now,” a strategic move designed to strengthen connections with patients and enhance public confidence in the brand.
While “Novo Nordisk A/S” will remain the official corporate designation worldwide, the simplified “Novo” moniker will serve for everyday communications, accompanied by a refreshed visual design that retains the iconic Apis bull emblem from the company’s history.
Chief Executive Officer Mike Doustdar emphasized continuity in the company’s mission. “We remain true to our purpose of changing people’s lives and are ambitious about our future to help them have lasting health, starting right now,” he stated.
Introducing The Novo Way
The internal transformation, branded “The Novo Way,” rests on four foundational pillars: customer obsession, competitiveness, clarity, and care and integrity.
This blueprint is designed to accelerate Novo’s responsiveness in an increasingly competitive, consumer-focused marketplace.
Tania Sabroe, Executive Vice President of People, Organisation and Corporate Affairs, emphasized the connection between culture and branding. “Our updated culture will enable us to move with focus and speed,” she explained.
Losing Ground in Obesity Treatment
This strategic pivot arrives as Novo confronts mounting competition from Eli Lilly. Data from IQVIA referenced in a Lilly earnings report shows Novo controlled merely 38.8% of the obesity medication market during the second quarter, while Lilly dominated with 60.9%.
Investor confidence took another hit when the company recently terminated three clinical trials for an experimental cardiovascular treatment.
The oral version of Wegovy has provided a silver lining, reaching the market before Lilly’s rival weight management pill, Foundayo. This early entry positioned Novo advantageously in the direct-to-consumer segment.
The complete strategic roadmap will be unveiled at Novo’s Capital Markets Day scheduled for September 21 in London, where executives will present their revised business plan to investors.
