The Pentagon has green-lit contracts totaling up to $2.2 billion with five defense contractors to deploy nuclear microreactors at Army installations nationwide. The initial unit is slated to become operational by September 2028.
Dubbed the Janus Program and initiated last year, this initiative takes its name from the Roman deity representing transitions. Its primary objective is to provide military facilities with autonomous power generation independent of civilian electrical infrastructure.
Army Secretary Dan Driscoll emphasized the strategic importance of energy independence. “We are establishing the energy autonomy required to deploy combat capabilities worldwide, without dependence on external grids that could be compromised,” he stated.
The contract winners will deploy reactors at designated installations. Antares Nuclear received the Fort Bragg assignment in North Carolina. BWX Technologies will develop facilities at Fort Campbell in Kentucky. General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems secured Fort Hood in Texas. Radiant Industries obtained Fort Benning in Georgia, with their contract valued at up to $750 million covering up to 15 reactor units. Westinghouse Government Services will construct at Fort Drum in New York.
Power output from individual reactors will range from 1 to 20 megawatts, varying by design specifications. The installations will maintain grid connectivity. The reactors will supplement rather than replace existing power sources.
Military Strategic Advantages
Current Army operations depend on diesel fuel for emergency power generation. During wartime operations, transporting fuel to isolated positions presents significant logistical complications. Nuclear microreactors operate for extended periods without requiring refueling, offering substantial operational advantages for defense applications.
Contrasting with traditional large-scale nuclear facilities, microreactors are factory-manufactured and field-deployable. Construction costs are dramatically lower than conventional reactors, which exceed $10 billion per unit and require approximately ten years to complete.
Several advanced designs, including those developed by Radiant and Valar Atomics, utilize helium gas cooling systems rather than water-based approaches. This technology is regarded as inherently safer with diminished meltdown probability.
Venture Capital Influx
Private equity is rapidly following government investment. Radiant has secured over $500 million from prominent investors including Andreessen Horowitz and carries a $1.9 billion valuation. Valar Atomics completed a $1 billion funding round this month at a $6 billion valuation. Antares secured $370 million in financing last month.
Several microreactor developers have pursued public listings. Nano Nuclear commands approximately $1 billion in market capitalization. Terra Innovatum trades at $625 million. Deep Fission approaches $400 million valuation.
Investment firms anticipate that Pentagon contracts will validate the technology and create pathways to commercial markets, particularly AI data centers requiring substantial rapid power deployment.
Skepticism remains widespread. Detractors argue that security expenses alone render remote civilian deployment financially impractical. Nuclear facilities mandate continuous armed security presence, economically viable on military property but prohibitively expensive at civilian locations. Regulatory compliance costs represent additional obstacles.
Pentagon officials project private sector investment will reach billions of dollars complementing federal expenditures.
