Shares of Reddit (RDDT) experienced a significant rally on Wednesday, advancing 9.3% to close at $158.10, which positioned the social media company as the day’s second-strongest performer within the S&P 500 index.
The upward momentum followed commentary from Baird analyst Colin Sebastian, who stated that market participants have essentially baked in expectations for either a disappointing or unchanged renewal of the company’s data licensing arrangement with Google. His assessment suggests that even an unfavorable outcome may not trigger significant downside pressure on the stock.
The agreement in question contributes roughly $130 million to Reddit’s annual top line and is set to lapse in the early months of next year. Negotiations regarding its renewal are currently underway.
According to Sebastian’s analysis, while a less favorable renewal shouldn’t materially damage the stock’s trajectory, a more advantageous agreement than anticipated could add between $10 and $20 to the share price.
A key point of contention in ongoing discussions centers on the presentation and attribution of Reddit’s content across Google’s ecosystem. AI-powered search platforms, including those operated by Google and OpenAI, prefer to retain users within their own environments to safeguard advertising revenue streams, which conflicts with Reddit’s content distribution objectives.
The company’s advertising business has generated $2.6 billion in revenue across the trailing twelve-month period.
Quarterly Performance Exceeds Expectations
Reddit delivered impressive financial results in its latest quarterly report. The platform reported earnings per share of $1.25 for the second quarter, significantly outpacing analyst consensus of $0.95. Total revenue reached $804.91 million, representing a 61% increase compared to the prior-year period and exceeding forecasts of $731 million.
In the comparable quarter last year, Reddit reported earnings per share of only $0.45, highlighting the substantial year-over-year improvement.
The company’s net profit margin registered at 31.35%, while return on equity measured 29.02%. Current analyst projections call for full-year earnings per share of $5.27.
User Expansion Showing Signs of Deceleration
While financial metrics remain robust, the pace of user acquisition has moderated. Global daily active users expanded 17% year-over-year during the first quarter and 18% in the second quarter. These figures compare unfavorably to growth rates of 31% and 21% recorded in the corresponding periods twelve months earlier.
The deceleration represents a noteworthy shift, despite the growth rates remaining in positive territory.
Analyst perspectives vary considerably. Loop Capital maintains a $260 price objective, Needham projects $300, and B. Riley recently increased its target to $270. Zacks Investment Research downgraded the stock from “strong buy” to “hold” in a recent update.
The aggregate view from 31 analysts yields a “Moderate Buy” rating alongside an average price target of $221.10.
Insider transaction activity has intensified recently. Company insiders have divested approximately $33.7 million in shares over the past three months. Board member Robert Sauerberg disposed of 5,128 shares at $159.92 per share on August 25th, reducing his stake by 15.92%.
Technical indicators show Reddit’s 50-day moving average at $170.91, compared to its 200-day moving average of $158.53. The company carries a market capitalization of $29.57 billion with a beta coefficient of 2.02.
