Set to launch no earlier than 7:26 a.m. ET on August 30, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will ascend aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A at Florida’s Kennedy Space Center.
The observatory honors Nancy Grace Roman, NASA’s pioneering chief astronomer who earned recognition as the “mother of the Hubble Space Telescope.” Roman died in 2018, having reached 93 years of age.
Measuring 42 feet in length and exceeding 14 feet in width, the Roman observatory will journey to a gravitationally balanced location approximately 930,000 miles from our planetāthe second Lagrange point between the sun and Earth.
Two primary scientific instruments are housed within the telescope: a wide-field near-infrared camera featuring 300 megapixels and a specialized coronagraph that suppresses stellar light, enabling the detection of dim planets in neighboring star systems.
How Roman Surpasses Hubble’s Capabilities
The Roman telescope’s camera delivers a field of view that dwarfs Hubble’s by a factor of 100. Within a five-year period, it’s projected to survey more than 50 times the celestial area that Hubble covered over 30 years of operation.
Primary scientific objectives encompass investigating dark matter and dark energy, conducting a comprehensive survey of over one billion galaxies, and potentially identifying up to 100,000 previously unknown exoplanets. Multiple corporations contributed essential hardware to the Roman telescope project. L3Harris Technologies delivered components and engineering services for the optical assembly systems. BAE Systems furnished instrumentation packages, while Teledyne Technologies manufactured the infrared detection sensors.
L3Harris recorded approximately $6 billion in space systems revenue during the first six months of 2026, representing a 15% increase compared to the previous year. Teledyne’s aerospace and digital imaging divisions collectively accounted for roughly 70% of its second-quarter earnings.
