SK Hynix shares experienced significant gains on Friday following dual announcements regarding American manufacturing initiatives, providing market participants with fresh catalysts.
The Korean memory semiconductor manufacturer posted gains of 5.6% reaching ₩1,843,000 on Seoul’s KOSPI exchange, while the American-traded SKHY advanced more than 4.6% during premarket hours on September 18.
The initial development: SK Hynix’s American division, Solidigm, is evaluating the establishment of a NAND flash production facility on American territory. Upstate New York has surfaced as a candidate site, based on a Reuters article referencing sources with knowledge of the situation.
An American-based manufacturing plant would provide Solidigm with an alternative production hub beyond its current Dalian, China operations. The move would also minimize the company’s vulnerability to American import duties and possible limitations on semiconductor technology exports to China.
The company hasn’t finalized any decisions yet. SK Hynix acknowledged that Solidigm is evaluating alternatives to enhance its market standing, though emphasized that concrete plans haven’t been established. Elevated American production expenses relative to South Korea continue to be a consideration.
Intel Partnership Discussions Compound the Narrative
Coinciding with the Solidigm developments, Reuters additionally disclosed that SK Hynix is engaging in preliminary discussions with Intel regarding American memory chip manufacturing for the first time.
Two frameworks are reportedly under consideration: SK Hynix securing capacity at Intel’s projected Ohio semiconductor complex, or both entities establishing a collaborative venture with leading cloud service providers seeking to guarantee consistent memory chip availability.
SK Hynix informed Investing.com that it is seriously evaluating strategies to broaden American memory chip manufacturing, though emphasized that definitive decisions haven’t been reached on this initiative either.
These negotiations are distinct from the Solidigm NAND production facility considerations.
Industry Standing and Wider Landscape
SK Hynix already maintains a substantial American presence in development activities. The corporation is establishing a $4 billion Indiana campus dedicated to advanced HBM packaging and research operations, with mass production of next-generation HBM4E chips planned for 2029.
Within the HBM segment, which enables AI accelerators, SK Hynix dominates with a 50% revenue share in Q2 2026. Samsung captures 33%, while Micron secures third position at 18%.
In DRAM production, Samsung maintains the lead with a 39.4% market share, SK Hynix commands 24.9%, and Micron follows at 23.3%. These three manufacturers collectively represent approximately 88% of worldwide DRAM revenues.
Within NAND production, Samsung dominates with a 29.3% stake. SK Hynix Group, incorporating Solidigm, claims second position at 18.2%, surpassing Micron at 15.1%.
The wider macroeconomic climate provided additional momentum to the advance. American 10-year Treasury yields retreated after momentarily exceeding 5% earlier in the week, crude oil prices declined, and risk sentiment strengthened throughout Asian trading sessions. The KOSPI climbed approximately 2% during the session, driven by semiconductor sector purchases, with international investors becoming net acquirers of Korean stocks.
Competitor Samsung Electronics similarly recorded gains during the trading day.
According to TipRanks, SKHY holds a Strong Buy consensus recommendation based on 11 unanimous Buy ratings, with an average price target of $249.70.
