RBC Capital Markets is sounding an alarm about potential short-term weakness in U.S. equities, projecting the S&P 500 could experience a decline of up to 10%, despite maintaining an optimistic longer-term forecast.
Lori Calvasina, who leads U.S. equity strategy at RBC, indicated that the likelihood of a “typical market correction in the 5-10% range has increased” as autumn approaches.
She identified three key factors driving this cautious stance.
Three Critical Risk Factors Converge
First among these concerns is seasonal patterns. Historical data shows the S&P 500 has posted negative returns in September during half of the past decade.
Second, the approaching U.S. midterm elections present uncertainty. RBC’s analysis highlights that midterm election years typically generate heightened market turbulence during the latter half of the year. The firm also observed that artificial intelligence has emerged as a political issue, with prediction markets indicating a possible Democratic victory across both chambers—an outcome RBC’s research suggests could be less favorable for equity markets.
Third, the intensifying Iran situation poses ongoing challenges. Calvasina emphasized that the conflict has negatively impacted consumer confidence levels.
Equity futures retreated Wednesday morning following reports of U.S. military operations destroying five Iranian oil tankers. This development temporarily lifted Brent crude past $100 per barrel, marking its peak since July.
Dow Jones Industrial Average futures declined 152 points, representing a 0.3% drop. S&P 500 futures decreased 0.2%, while Nasdaq 100 futures similarly retreated 0.2%.
All three benchmark indexes had already experienced losses in the prior trading session amid escalating oil prices. Elevated energy costs are intensifying worries about inflationary pressures.
Bond Yields Climb as Inflation Concerns Intensify
The 10-year Treasury note yield advanced to 4.8% Wednesday. Increasing yields signal market expectations that borrowing costs could remain elevated for an extended period.
Deutsche Bank analyst Jim Reid observed that surging energy prices are reducing investor appetite for risk across multiple asset categories.
Market participants are closely monitoring inflation metrics ahead of Friday’s August consumer price index release.
Calvasina noted that small-capitalization stocks have lagged since late June as market expectations for additional interest rate increases have strengthened.
However, not all sectors faced downward pressure. Artificial intelligence-related equities attracted buying interest despite broader market weakness. Semiconductor manufacturer Qualcomm and storage technology provider Sandisk both showed pre-market gains.
Apple’s annual product launch event was also scheduled for Wednesday, with market watchers anticipating the introduction of a foldable iPhone model.
Notwithstanding these immediate headwinds, RBC continues to support its 12-month S&P 500 price objective of 8,150. This target represents approximately 6% appreciation from the index’s September 8 closing level.
Calvasina explained that all five analytical models employed by the firm to determine its forecast continue to indicate positive returns over the upcoming year.
