The upward movement followed CEO Elon Musk’s retweet of an Nvidia announcement regarding its Vera Rubin GPU processors, where he disclosed SpaceX’s collaboration on creating a “space-optimized” variant intended for orbital deployment in 2027, with expansion to “significant scale” anticipated in 2028.
Representing Nvidia’s newest generation of AI processing technology, Vera Rubin delivers enhanced computational performance and superior token processing capabilities compared to the Blackwell generation. Increased throughput translates directly to reduced expenses per AI operation.
The space environment presents unique challenges for electronic components. Elevated radiation exposure and alternative thermal management requirements render conventional chip designs unsuitable. This necessitates purpose-built hardware engineered for orbital conditions.
The broader strategic vision involves SpaceX’s development of an orbital constellation dedicated to AI computation. Musk contends that solar-powered processors operating in space can achieve cost efficiencies surpassing terrestrial data facilities dependent on grid electricity.
Realizing this vision depends on Starship readiness. The fully reusable launch system remains in development phases, with the fourteenth test flight scheduled for September.
Revenue Performance by Division
The satellite launch division generated $962 million during the latest reporting period, representing growth from $619 million in the previous quarter. This substantially exceeds competitor Rocket Lab’s $234 million for the equivalent timeframe.
The AI operations segment demonstrates rapid expansion, with revenue climbing to $2.56 billion from $818 million year-over-year. Primary revenue sources include Grok, the company’s AI chatbot platform, alongside data center services competing with providers such as CoreWeave and Nebius.
The data center division has secured contractual commitments exceeding $2 billion monthly in forward revenue, with customers including Google, Anthropic, and Reflection AI.
Starlink maintained upward trajectory, with connectivity revenue expanding to $4.2 billion from $3.2 billion compared to the prior year. The active user base exceeded 12 million subscribers.
Rising Investment Requirements
Capital expenditures reached $18 billion in the second quarter alone, up from $10 billion during the same period last year. First-half total capital investment reached $28.4 billion, primarily allocated to data center infrastructure expansion.
Company leadership has indicated continued substantial investment requirements extending into future periods.
SpaceX concluded the quarter holding more than $100 billion in liquid assets and marketable instruments, comprising $93.5 billion in cash equivalents alongside $6.4 billion in marketable securities. Total obligations stood at $65 billion, with negligible debt burden.
Goldman Sachs analysts project long-term revenue potential of $474 billion for SpaceX. Current-year revenue estimates stand at $44.6 billion, with projections reaching $105 billion by 2026.
SPCX shares currently trade approximately 30% above the monthly trough, while remaining roughly 40% below the all-time peak of $225.
