Tesla’s revolutionary Cybercab will enable passengers to connect PlayStation or Xbox gaming consoles directly to its expansive 22-inch display, based on recent confirmation from CEO Elon Musk.
The announcement came as Musk responded to newly unveiled entertainment visuals showcasing the Cybercab’s capabilities. These promotional materials highlighted the vehicle’s built-in entertainment ecosystem, featuring streaming video, music platforms, and gaming applications integrated into the oversized front display.
What sets this apart is the focus on external hardware rather than proprietary software. Passengers will have the option to bring their personal Sony PlayStation or Microsoft Xbox systems and hook them up to the display, essentially treating the car’s screen as they would any home television.
Evolution From Tesla’s Previous Gaming Initiatives
Tesla first introduced gaming capabilities to its vehicles in 2019, launching arcade-style titles accessible to drivers waiting at Supercharger stations. When the refreshed Model S and Model X debuted in 2021, they featured custom graphics processing units delivering approximately 10 teraflops of computational power, matching the Sony PlayStation 5’s performance level.
The company expanded gaming options in 2022 by integrating Valve’s Steam platform into newer Model S and Model X vehicles. That partnership ended in 2024 when Tesla discontinued Steam compatibility following an entertainment system hardware revision.
Back in 2021, Musk explicitly stated Tesla had no plans to develop a proprietary gaming console to rival Microsoft or Sony’s offerings, calling such an endeavor unnecessary. The latest Cybercab announcement aligns with that philosophy by leveraging established gaming platforms rather than building competing ones.
Cybercab Specifications and Features
The Cybercab design eliminates traditional driving controls entirelyāno steering wheel and no pedals are present. This fully self-driving vehicle is currently transporting fare-paying customers throughout Tesla’s Austin operating zone without any human supervision.
The interior has been engineered as a dedicated entertainment environment. Factory-installed applications provide access to movies, music streaming, and interactive games. Plans include outfitting vehicles with Starlink V5 equipment to ensure robust internet connectivity throughout trips.
According to Musk’s confirmation, the hardware interface will accommodate physical console connections, enabling full video output, audio transmission, and controller input functionality through the vehicle’s integrated screen.
This design philosophy transforms the display from a driver assistance tool into a pure passenger entertainment interface. Without anyone controlling the vehicle, travel time becomes leisure time, making comprehensive gaming setups considerably more viable.
Regulatory considerations remain relevant. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration previously launched an investigation into Tesla regarding potential driver distraction from in-vehicle gaming, resulting in Tesla disabling gaming features during active driving. Console functionality in autonomous vehicles would need to comply with local regulations governing self-driving car operations.
From Sony and Microsoft’s perspective, this development creates an additional display platform without requiring capital investment in new hardware development. Gamers maintain access to their complete game collections and progression data.
Tesla’s contribution centers on supplying the display panel, electrical power infrastructure, and physical connectivity ports. Gaming content and licensing agreements remain under the console manufacturers’ control.
The Cybercab service is currently operational in Austin. Tesla has not announced timing for broader availability of the console connectivity feature.
