UniCredit, ranking among Europe’s premier banking institutions, is examining opportunities in crypto custody and brokerage operations. According to Bloomberg’s reporting, the bank has entered preliminary discussions to identify a technology partner capable of safeguarding digital assets and executing client transactions.
The institution has not finalized its approach. Under consideration are custody solutions, brokerage capabilities, tokenized investment vehicles, fixed-income digital securities, and stablecoin-related services.
UniCredit’s Digital Asset Initiatives To Date
The banking group has already established a foothold in cryptocurrency-linked offerings. July 2025 saw the introduction of a five-year Bitcoin-linked certificate designed for Italian professional investors, structured around BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust with complete principal protection and returns capped at 85%.
By December 2025, UniCredit facilitated Italy’s inaugural tokenized minibond on a public blockchain—a 5 million euro issuance for E4 Computer Engineering registered on the Polygon network.
The bank participates in Qivalis, a coalition of 37 European financial institutions developing a MiCA-compliant euro-backed stablecoin for deployment on Ethereum during the latter half of 2026. The digital token will maintain full euro deposit backing at a 1:1 ratio.
All digital asset offerings must adhere to the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets framework. With the MiCA transition period concluding July 1, service providers require proper licensing to operate throughout the 30-nation European Economic Area.
Peer institutions have pursued comparable strategies. Deutsche Bank established a partnership with Switzerland-based Taurus for digital asset safekeeping. BBVA now provides Bitcoin trading services to private banking clients in Switzerland. Israel’s Bank Leumi has arranged for Galaxy to manage trading and custody operations for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana, targeting a 2027 launch.
September 8 marked UniCredit’s acquisition of a minority position in VC Trade, a Frankfurt-based platform specializing in bond and loan digitization, which has processed over 90 billion euros across more than 600 transactions.
Circle’s Arc Blockchain Launches as BRICS Digital Currency Plans Remain Uncertain
As traditional banks expand their digital asset capabilities, Circle is set to unveil its Arc Layer-1 blockchain on September 16. The network employs USDC as its native gas token and delivers transaction finality in under one second.
The rollout precedes a US Senate procedural vote on the CLARITY Act scheduled for September 15. Circle has stated Arc’s deployment will proceed independent of any legislative developments.
The stablecoin sector currently maintains 308 billion dollars in aggregate supply, having processed 7.5 trillion dollars in settlement volume through March.
During this week’s BRICS Summit in New Delhi, participating countries examined the possibility of interconnecting their central bank digital currencies to diminish dependence on conventional banking infrastructure. India, serving as summit host, expressed opposition to a unified BRICS currency, advocating instead for bilateral CBDC linkage arrangements.
The New Delhi Declaration, finalized September 12, includes CBDC interoperability as a priority item. Nevertheless, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra acknowledged the proposal remains within the feasibility assessment stage.
Circle’s Arc blockchain goes operational Monday. The BRICS CBDC interconnection proposal lacks a defined implementation schedule.
