On September 1, 2026, Ripple executed its scheduled release of 1 billion XRP tokens. Market reaction? Minimal downside pressure.
What once triggered anxiety among retail holders has evolved into a routine market occurrence. The distribution occurred through three separate transactions: 500 million, 400 million, and 100 million XRP, all executed within a brief timeframe. The combined value reached approximately $1.38 billion. XRP maintained stability, trading at $1.38 during the unlock and climbing to $1.42 within five days.
Ripple initiated its escrow mechanism in December 2017, securing 55 billion XRP in time-locked smart contracts to address market concerns regarding supply concentration. Monthly releases can reach up to 1 billion tokens. However, Ripple routinely returns 700 to 900 million tokens back into escrow, resulting in only 100 to 300 million entering actual circulation.
This practice significantly reduces the net supply impact. Historical analysis reveals that monthly unlocks generate average 7-day price fluctuations ranging from -3.1% to +1.7%. Currently, 31.28 billion tokens remain in escrow.
August Performance Fueled Current Momentum
XRP began August trading near $1.10 and surged 28.5% by month’s close, reaching a peak of $1.70 on August 28. This marked XRP’s most impressive August performance since 2021.

Institutional capital, rather than retail participation, powered this advance. Spot XRP ETFs, which received approval in March 2026, attracted $153.55 million throughout August, with $150.28 million concentrated in the final fourteen days. Meanwhile, retail trading volume on exchanges experienced a modest decline during the rally.
Total ETF inflows have reached $1.68 billion since inception, with current net assets standing at $1.48 billion. On September 4, XRP ETFs recorded neutral daily net flows, though asset values remained stable.
XRPL Network Activity Reaches Unprecedented Heights
The XRP Ledger registered 2.26 million active addresses throughout August, more than doubling July’s figure of 1.02 million. The 7-day moving average for daily active addresses climbed to 1.34 million, establishing a new peak.
Payment volume exploded by 521% during a single week in late August, driving daily volume to approximately 488.4 million XRP. Interestingly, individual transaction counts declined by 10.5%, indicating fewer but significantly larger transfers ā a characteristic pattern of institutional or enterprise-level operations.
Total value locked within the XRPL ecosystem increased from $32.31 million in July to $44.42 million by August’s conclusion.
Market analyst Celal Kucuker shared on X that XRP “looks amazing,” identifying several technical patterns converging toward a $2.30 target, speculating that this price level “could come sooner than expected” if XRP successfully reclaims $1.50.
As of September 7, XRP trades around $1.42, maintaining position above the critical $1.40 support zone. The Senate postponed consideration of the CLARITY Act before entering recess, introducing additional regulatory ambiguity. Congressional sessions resume September 14, followed by a Federal Reserve policy meeting on September 15ā16.
