Key Points
- The Zano network reverted to block 3,833,000, eliminating approximately 30 days of recorded transactions.
- An exploit in the Gateway Address feature enabled the creation of unlimited ZANO and Freedom Dollar tokens.
- Exchange MEXC temporarily suspended ZANO and FUSD trading activity while coordinating the network migration.
- Affected users will receive compensation from existing development reserves and team allocations, avoiding new token minting.
- The ZANO token declined over 12% within a 24-hour period following the network reset announcement.
Privacy-oriented layer-1 network Zano has executed a network reset following the discovery of a critical security flaw that permitted the creation of tokens beyond the protocol’s fixed supply limits. The emergency measure eliminated approximately 30 days of blockchain activity.
Network operations resumed from block 3,833,000, the final block created before the implementation of Hard Fork 6. This August upgrade introduced Gateway Addresses, the feature at the center of the security incident.
Understanding the Security Vulnerability
The Gateway Address functionality was designed to streamline integration for centralized exchanges, cross-chain bridges, and payment processors. Instead of managing individual transaction outputs like traditional Zano wallets, these addresses provided a unified account balance system.
Security researchers identified a critical flaw within this mechanism that enabled the unlimited generation of both ZANO and Freedom Dollar tokens. According to the development team, this vulnerability fundamentally compromised the network’s fixed supply model.
A comprehensive technical postmortem detailing the precise mechanics of the exploit remains pending. The team confirmed that standard wallet private keys and the network’s privacy features remained secure throughout the incident.
Creating a Gateway Address required a one-time payment of 100 ZANO tokens, which were permanently removed from circulation. Blockchain records indicate that at least two such addresses were established within the feature’s initial week of availability.
Network Recovery Process
Restoring network integrity requires all infrastructure operators—including miners, validators, node runners, and trading platforms—to deploy updated client software and synchronize with the recovered blockchain state. Version 2.2.3.600 was released specifically for this migration.
Standard wallet users can upgrade their software without needing to re-enter recovery phrases or seed words. The project has begun bringing its infrastructure back online, including the backend systems supporting its mobile wallet application.
External service providers must complete their own migration timelines independently. The Zano team advised users to verify that their chosen exchange or wallet service has successfully migrated before attempting any transfers.
Trading platform MEXC temporarily halted all deposit and withdrawal functionality for both ZANO and FUSD during the transition period. The exchange had not announced a resumption timeline at the time of reporting.
Quinten van Welzen, serving as Zano’s head of marketing and growth, emphasized that the development team lacks unilateral authority to enforce a blockchain rollback. According to van Welzen, developers can only release updated software and request adoption from independent node operators.
He noted that major mining operations hold significant influence in such decisions, while emphasizing that a more distributed network of independent operators would enhance overall protocol resilience.
All transactions recorded during the affected 30-day window have been erased from the restored blockchain. This includes both legitimate user activity and the fraudulent tokens generated through the exploit.
The rollback mechanism cannot reverse transactions that were finalized on external blockchain networks. Assets that were converted to USDT, DAI, or other tokens on separate protocols remain beyond the scope of this recovery operation.
The project announced it is collaborating with impacted stakeholders to quantify losses. A formal compensation framework and claims submission process has not yet been made public.
Van Welzen clarified that reimbursement resources will be sourced from the development treasury, team token holdings, and contributions from major stakeholders. He stressed that no new ZANO tokens will be created to fund the compensation program.
Initial communications from the project suggested a more limited rollback period while investigators were still determining the full extent of the breach. Van Welzen later explained that those preliminary assessments were issued before the team had completed its comprehensive analysis.
The decision to implement a full 30-day rollback came after forensic examination revealed the complete timeline of the exploitation.
Market Impact and Future Plans
ZANO was trading around $6.32 during the recovery period, representing a decline of approximately 12.85% over the preceding 24 hours, based on CoinMarketCap data. The project’s total market capitalization stood at approximately $97.6 million.

The development team committed to publishing a detailed technical report examining the root cause of the vulnerability and documenting a thorough audit of related code components. No timeline has been established for reactivating the Gateway Address functionality.
The feature will remain disabled until the completion of the security review process.
