Microsoft (MSFT) shares traded near $417.79 after a mild intraday decline, while the Bill Gates Foundation maintained a public equity portfolio worth about $33 billion. The latest portfolio data showed Berkshire Hathaway, WM, and Microsoft among the foundation’s largest holdings. Meanwhile, the foundation continued managing assets that support its long-term global spending plans through 2045.
Microsoft Remains a Key Foundation Holding
Microsoft has played a central role in Bill Gates’ wealth creation for more than three decades. The company remains one of the world’s largest technology businesses and continues expanding its software and cloud operations. Gates has shifted much of his attention toward philanthropic work through the Gates Foundation.
The foundation recently sold the final shares from Gates’ latest Microsoft donation. As a result, the trust reduced its direct exposure to the company within its public equity portfolio. However, Gates still owns about 103 million Microsoft shares worth roughly $43 billion.
Microsoft continues to benefit from demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence services. The company has expanded its infrastructure and software offerings across enterprise markets. Moreover, its business remains one of the largest contributors to the global technology sector.
Berkshire Hathaway Holds the Largest Portfolio Position
Berkshire Hathaway represents the largest position within the Gates Foundation trust portfolio. The holding accounts for about one-quarter of the portfolio’s total value based on recent filings. Meanwhile, annual donations from Warren Buffett have continued adding Berkshire shares to the foundation.
Buffett has supported the foundation through regular stock donations for many years. The foundation must spend the value of those donations and additional assets each year. Consequently, portfolio managers periodically sell portions of Berkshire holdings to meet spending requirements.
Berkshire reported solid first-quarter results under Chief Executive Officer Greg Abel. Its insurance operations improved earnings during the period and supported overall business performance. Additionally, the company reported progress within its railroad segment while maintaining a substantial cash position.
WM Maintains Its Position Among Top Holdings
WM stands as the second-largest position within the Gates Foundation trust portfolio. The company accounts for approximately 18% of the portfolio’s total value. The foundation has held WM shares for decades with limited portfolio changes.
The waste management company operates 262 active solid waste landfills across its network. It also owns medical waste incinerators and other facilities that support its operations. WM maintains a large infrastructure base within the environmental services industry.
WM reported an EBITDA margin of 29.8% during the latest quarter. The figure increased by 70 basis points compared with the previous year. Cost optimization efforts and renewable natural gas operations supported margin growth despite weather-related impacts.
The company also benefits from extensive route density and operational scale. These factors help improve efficiency across residential and commercial waste collection services. WM continues expanding sustainable energy and medical waste businesses alongside its core operations.
The Gates Foundation plans to distribute substantial resources over the coming decades. Its portfolio remains concentrated in large and established companies with durable business models. Consequently, Berkshire Hathaway, WM and Microsoft continue occupying prominent positions within the foundation’s investment strategy.
